Unfortunately I largely agree with @sarabollman…though there are lovely deep individuals from this dharma stream that are exceptions to this, pragmatic dharma really didn’t deliver the goods ime. It did, however, get me to a place where I could take the next step, but that then also involved uninstalling an epic series of bad habits I picked up from the scene. 🤷

@daemonhugger I am familiar with them, and Martha Nussbaum is a classic scholar (as you know). In fact I also recently came across their work and made a Notebook LM notebook out of it - here it is if you like notebooklm.google.com/notebook/772a8…

@seanstevenson Ah yeah ok. This reminds me of Martha Nussbaum and Amartya Sen’s work on how to build flourishing into an economic metric similar to GDP. Are you familiar? (I haven’t dug in about it but it crossed my desk recently)

@daemonhugger I see people valuing things for their identity (what they are) or their utility (what they’re useful for) - not if they are flourishing. To some extent it’s the liberal tendency to promote the freedom of individuals to pursue their own ends - but no one can agree on the good life

The U.S. government just essentially announced its intention to impose Iran-level sanctions, or China-level entity listing, on an American company. This is by a profoundly wide margin the most damaging policy move I have ever seen USG try to take (it probably will not succeed).

The desire for security and the feeling of insecurity are the same thing. To hold your breath is to lose your breath. A society based on the quest for security is nothing but a breath-retention contest in which everyone is as taut as a drum and as purple as a beet.
