Minister Marc Miller cannot divorce his office from the Canadian Museum for Human Rights’ Nakba exhibit. B’nai Brith Canada has warned that the CMHR’s development of the exhibit has been flawed. What the Federal Government allowed to transpire was not a curatorial error, the available evidence suggests that the CMHR's leadership failed to govern the museum in accordance with its mandate. Ensuring the good governance of the CMHR is directly within the purview of the Minister. When our concerns were brought to the attention of the Minister, the Minister dismissed them. Now, after the exhibit has opened to the public, the Minister has acknowledged some of the deficiencies in the exhibit. The problem is that this is not simply about one missing reference to Hamas. It is about Canada's national human rights museum being enabled to present a biased account of a deeply contested historical and political subject, even after its leadership and the Federal Government were repeatedly warned of the dangers of presenting an incomplete and misleading narrative. If the Minister now accepts that the exhibit is flawed, then the next step cannot be a quiet cosmetic edit. The exhibit must be closed, pending a full review by qualified experts, an investigation must be opened, and those responsible for failing in their duties to govern the CMHR must immediately removed from office. ctvnews.ca/world/israel-h…

This is a shameful truth about Canada today, @harleyf. Thank-you for shining a light on it. The notion that this hatred is all about Israel's campaign against Hamas is a transparent lie. On October 16, 2023, just days after Hamas had launched the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, I was lined up to speak at the opening of a national conference in Ottawa called "Antisemitism: Face It, Fight It." The event had been planned for over a year prior to the Hamas attacks. It was not a foreign policy conference, there were no Israeli politicians speaking. It was simply an effort to bring together Canadians from different backgrounds, including non-Jews like me, to discuss strategies to combat the anti-semitism that had been metastasizing in Canada *before* October 7. As I approached the main entrance of the conference centre, I saw a group of about 20 protestors who crowded around the front door, blocking the entrance. They were chanting the usual calls for violence against Jews, e.g. "globalize the Intifada." They pushed and shoved me as I tried to enter. I was shocked to see Ottawa police standing to the side, doing nothing to respond. I and others who were blocked from entering finally found an alternative side entrance through an exit door. All of this was while Israel was still trying to identify the remains of murdered civilians, and before the IDF had begun large scale operations in Gaza. They were actually protesting a conference on combatting Canadian antisemitism by chanting for violence against Canadian Jews! As far as I know, the protest attracted zero media attention, and no arrests from the police. That's when I realized that this kind of hatred had already been normalized. As Harley points out, the antisemites have exploited the weakness of our institutions over the past two years to entrench their hatred ever more deeply. May all Canadians who reject this ancient hatred resolve to do more to combat it in 2026.

@harleyf thank you for your thoughtful critique of Canada‘s all too comfortable descent into antisemitism. Sadly, the refrain “this is not who we are” and “antisemitism has no place in Canada”, heard far too often by those who could do something about it but choose not to rings as hollow as “thoughts and prayers“ following a school shooting in the United States. This is, in fact who we are. Antisemitism does, in fact, have a place in Canada and until some our leaders recognize the role they have played in allowing this social tumour to grow, I fear for the future.
