@AmmarMerhbi @Doug_Lemov How would you define “explicit instruction?” This is something I’ve grappled with a bit this summer and seen it used in a lot of different contexts. Have decided to just start asking. Would you say it’s as simple as explaining/demonstrating? What would you add to that?

Teachers College at Columbia University, despite its prestige, has promoted instructional models, like discovery learning and balanced literacy, that run counter to decades of research in how students learn best. By sidelining explicit instruction, downplaying phonics, and neglecting principles like cognitive load theory, TC has contributed to a generation of teachers unprepared for the realities of the classroom. This isn’t a philosophical disagreement. It’s a question of effectiveness, equity, and evidence. If teacher preparation doesn’t align with the science of learning, it actively harms those it claims to serve, teachers and their students. TC continues to emphasize frameworks rooted in constructivist, discovery-based pedagogy, despite overwhelming evidence from cognitive science that 1. Explicit instruction is more effective, especially for novices 2. Systematic phonics is essential in early reading 3. Cognitive Load Theory should guide instructional design Its influence on teacher education remains strong, which means many new teachers are still entering classrooms without training in evidence-based methods. The gap persists between what research shows works and what many programs, TC included, still teach.

@Doug_Lemov @dylanwiliam “To make students smarter is not to give them practice in thinking but to give them more to think with” is such a profound statement in episode 1. I’ve got to facilitate some professional development on literacy in August and I’m got to tie that in.

@coachliamflynn Personally my favorite game. So many opportunities to find solutions to game situations. Wondering if you have ever experimented with allowing players to cut in this one? I’ve started trying it out and trying to right way to constrain it or frame it so it helps. Thoughts?

Option 3 - 4v3. With the added defender now we allow driving for 'spray outs' or layups (can be contested or uncontested). ✅Can only shoot open shots. If you are guarded, pass the ball to the open player. ✅ 8 Second shot clock. ✅ Scoring - 3s and 2s as normal. 1pt for an open shot which hits the hoop (Reward for decision to take an "easy" shot which doesnt end up in a basket). 0pts + Turnover for any contested jump shots (Penalty for decision to take a "hard" shot instead of finding a team mate who has an "easy" shot).

How do we add more variability to shooting development drills? One way is to add defenders and turn the "drill" into a "game" (i.e. Small Sided Games). Here are some SSGs options. First up 4v1 form shooting (feet cant leave the ground). Players positioned on elbows and boxes. This one we added three constraints: ✅ Can only shoot open shots. If you are guarded, pass the ball to the open player. ✅ 8 Second shot clock ✅ Has to be a form shot off the dribble.

OKC has 5 guys that would have been the Jazz best perimeter defender back when they were the #1 seed.

@seasublime love this question! First- play multiple sports. Even if sports are w/friends and not structured. Do lots of tag for multiplanar development, sprint 10-40 yards 1-2 times per week, jump on and off stuff. Climb, crawl, and throw (medball, frisbee, shot putt…) make a decathlon

inability to “let go” is hurtingyoung athletes. When parents know the answer to their child’s improved performance will be routinely performing strength and speed, but they just can’t let go of playing 60 offseason games because they might fall behind. Like watching a car wreck

Noa is one of the most humble, yet competitive kids I’ve ever seen. The perfect athlete. A stone cold killer, but humble enough to just want to win games and never makes it about himself. Goat.

This app is the greatest. Without even saying if it was a hold or not a hold it’s hilarious to see Ute fans actually believe the refs “rigged” that game for BYU to win. I get it. I remember thinking that happened when I was 12-13 too. Sorry BYU is having your season Utah. 😂😂💙
