A truly historic evening at the #WHA78: the #PandemicAccord resolution was approved in Committee A with 124 in favour, 0 against and 11 abstentions. The final step: adoption in plenary tomorrow morning. My thanks once again to @WHO Member States for choosing to keep the world safer. 🙏

As we honor the anniversary of the Battle of #Adwa today, a victory that inspired anti-colonial movements across Africa, I’m also excited to celebrate my daughter’s birthday and my own tomorrow! It’s a wonderful time to express gratitude and reflect on our blessings. #Tigray #Ethiopia

Thank you to all my friends, colleagues, and everyone who has wished me well during the ordeal in the past few days. I'm especially grateful to the colleagues and airport staff, who were selfless as they tried to protect me. We faced a very dangerous attack, but my @UN colleagues and I are now safe. We successfully evacuated our wounded colleague to Amman, and he is stable. My heart goes out to our colleagues on the front lines and the civilians who face such danger every day. I am on my way back home to Geneva.

Our mission to negotiate the release of @UN staff detainees and to assess the health and humanitarian situation in #Yemen concluded today. We continue to call for the detainees' immediate release. As we were about to board our flight from Sana’a, about two hours ago, the airport came under aerial bombardment. One of our plane’s crew members was injured. At least two people were reported killed at the airport. The air traffic control tower, the departure lounge — just a few meters from where we were — and the runway were damaged. We will need to wait for the damage to the airport to be repaired before we can leave. My UN and @WHO colleagues and I are safe. Our heartfelt condolences to the families whose loved ones lost their lives in the attack.

Stress is everywhere — work pressure, school deadlines, problems at home, traffic on the roads, heartbreaking crises reported on the daily news or our own personal struggles. We all experience stress in some form, which affects both our mind and body. But how we respond to stress can make a crucial difference to our well-being. The first step to managing stress is learning to recognize its signs, these differ but may include: headaches, neck and shoulder pain, upset stomach, chest tightness, muscle tension, and a lack of appetite. Personally, I find that taking a walk with my children/grandchildren helps the most. Colleagues have shared other effective techniques: • Practicing breathing exercises • Sticking to a daily routine • Getting enough sleep • Reducing screen time • Eating healthy meals • Talking with a trusted person or seeking professional support, especially if you are having difficulties coping • Engaging in exercise you enjoy What works for you may vary, but tuning into the signals of stress is essential for staying healthy. It’s okay to take a break. It’s okay to prioritise your health. It’s okay to seek help. A positive mindset can make all the difference.

As a proud father of a teenage daughter, Blen, I’m deeply grateful for the strides science has made to protect her and millions of other girls from a really deadly disease — #CervicalCancer. Thanks to safe and effective #HPV vaccines, this is a worry that can be eliminated from parents' minds. However, not every girl is as fortunate. Despite the various safe vaccine options, many still don’t have access due to affordability and availability issues. HPV vaccine rollouts have faced setbacks, from global supply shortages since 2018 to production challenges earlier this year, leaving millions of girls — especially in Africa and Asia — without this critical protection. At WHO, we are working day and night with partners to change this. Recently, WHO approved the use of a fourth HPV vaccine for use with a single dose, bringing us one step closer to eliminating cervical cancer and bridging the gap in vaccine access. On this #DayOfTheGirl, I urge all governments to invest in making HPV vaccines accessible and affordable. Vaccinating at least 90% of girls in your country can eliminate cervical cancer from our children’s futures. To vaccine manufacturers, I call on you to prioritise people over profits. Let’s ensure every girl, everywhere, has the chance to receive this vital protection. And to fellow parents — HPV vaccines are safe. They are a gift of protection, allowing our daughters to live healthy lives, chase their dreams, and be truly free.

It's easy to get caught up in nonstop work. Precious moments like a simple walk with my daughter, who is growing too fast, remind me of what matters most. She helps me improve my work-life balance, one step at a time. Give it a try!

I started my career as a #malaria researcher, and I longed for the day that we would have an effective vaccine against this ancient and terrible disease. Now, @WHO recommends the use of two vaccines, RTS,S and R21, for children living in malaria endemic areas. Every 2 minutes a child dies from malaria. Vaccines are among the key tools to save more children from deadly mosquito bites. #WorldMosquitoDay

At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, Abebe Bikila, an #Ethiopian, made history by becoming the first black African to win gold in the men’s marathon. Not only that, he ran barefoot and broke the world record. Abebe Bikila inspired generations of runners, from Africa and around the world. That’s the power of sport: the power to inspire, and the power to change. #Paris2024
