Warning: Another super-extended rant!
I was excited when photos surfaced on social media showing RS posing with radio station winners at a fan meet and greet in Asunción. RS’s facial expression just screams “I don’t know what I’m doing here”. 😂
He should have worn his favorite shirt that day (the one with the “Open” lyrics).
Or perhaps a lime green and tangerine “number” (pardon the pun!)?
🎶You know I'm getting kind of worried
He doesn't seem himself at all
I’ve never seen him like this before!
He had the best laid plans this side of (South) America
Started out in CDMX and finished with Bogota
Red and blue soul (Chilean flag?)
With a Snow White smile
Can you dig it?
Can you dig it?
Can you dig it?
He’s got to make up his mind and make it soon
Is there room in his life
For one more trip to…….🌝 🌙
South America?
Is there room in his life
For one more?🎶
Fun fact: Chilean flag 🇨🇱 is the only South American flag that has the same colors as the US flag!
Some fans find Wrong Number a bit grating, but it’s refreshing to hear it every so often, especially when in a particular psychedelic “lime green & tangerine” type mood. I miss the days when RS would “call” up random public figures he disliked and roast them while singing this song live. Loved his references to various retro British cartoon characters (Noddy & Big Ears, among others!).
Would be great if he exhumed this highly entertaining aspect of shows (has it really been *seven* years?
“Seven years went under the bridge, like time was standing still”).
If he reprised the Spinal Tap joke about spontaneous combustion like he did in 2016, who would be his next “victim”?
Sultan al-Jaber?
The royal family?
Rishi Sunak?
Conservative Party cabinet?
Ron DeSantis?
Elon Musk*, Mark Zuckerberg, etc.?
Fossil fuel industry?
Privatized utility companies (i.e., water)?
Neil Tennant**?
Ticketmaster??
The list of potential “victims” is endless! 😅
Going back to the Asunción show: it has the distinction of being the first show on the LatAm leg that seemed like it came from straight from the dark ages/pre-internet days: no live setlist reports, live fan streams, or even audio recordings of the entire show. Boo. For virtual attendees, it was such a dramatic change compared with São Paulo’s concert film-caliber stream.
Thankfully a small handful of clips are now available on YouTube.
It looks to be yet another incredible show.
This is part of Primavera festival and not a standalone show so it was a likely candidate for an official stream. I wonder if Corona only sponsors some but not all Primavera shows.
The last time the band was in Paraguay, it delighted audience members (some of whom literally fainted) with an astonishing 38 songs. The setlist was relatively diverse last time. The cherry on top of the sundae was an incredibly rare conference held in the city. Halcyon days for Paraguayan Cure fans, no doubt.
Ten years later there was another meet & greet with fans (do I detect a pattern?) but the band shied away from a conference this time around. Darn.
I wonder why. Perhaps RS & Co. weren’t too keen about being grilled about inevitable questions regarding the new album! 😂 Understandable.
Interviews and conferences are incredibly revealing, and one of the rare opportunities to hear from the other band members. Jason barely spoke last time, which is a shame because I was hoping all members would get an equal opportunity to speak.
It would be amazing if each leg of the tour could conclude with a conference in which the band addresses various open-ended questions from local fans and music press (similar to how athletes are interviewed after a major sporting event).
Then I wake up…
On a different note, it’s interesting that there have been no soundcheck reports by fans on the LatAm leg thus far.
P.S. Love the Lucipurr shirt worn by Reeves - 😻he’s apparently very fond of it since it’s been worn a few times on the tour. RS’s Paraguayan flag-inspired shirt was intriguing. It’s been exciting to anticipate what shirt he’ll wear next.
So far the selections have been neutral - I thought he’d wear a football-themed shirt at one of the shows but maybe he didn’t want to alienate fans supporting a different team. There was a World Cup-themed shirt (pictured at CDMX airport) but that one was also
fairly neutral and worn outside an actual show. Maybe he’ll wear a Shakira shirt at the final show? It’s highly unlikely but he did showcase an Amy Winehouse shirt at Riot Fest so anything is possible (even though Amy was not from Chicago but it was more about the timing of the show - coinciding with what would’ve been her 40th birthday - rather than city of origin).
On a more frivolous note, the sheer variety of shirts RS wore on the US leg makes me wonder about the amount of luggage he had to bring. I often wondered if he purchased some shirts upon arrival at various destinations (a method used by some travelers to pack very light).
However, it seemed like he put a lot of thought into deciding which shirt would be relevant for each city and some shirts looked like they needed to be ordered ahead of time rather than bought spur of the moment.
On the current leg, however, some of the shirts seemed generic enough that he could have implemented the strategy noted above, and purchased the shirts locally either at duty free shops at the airport or a souvenir shop (the Montevideo shirt in particular seems like it could’ve been a local purchase).
Speaking of luggage, given that it’s late spring in the southern hemisphere, packing light is a breeze since there’s no need for large, bulky jackets/sweaters.
I just realized that Paraguay is the only landlocked country the band visited on the entire LatAm leg. 👀
Fun fact: Almost all countries in South America have a coastline/sea border.
Paraguay and Bolivia are the only two landlocked countries.
My phone had trouble with the automatic translation of Guarani, a national language of Paraguay. It thought it was Hungarian(!). I assume RS’s original post says something to the effect of “thank you”?
One final thought: A Fragile Thing seems to have (momentarily) fallen off the setlists. It doesn’t seem like a conscious decision, maybe the set lists organically evolved that way for various reasons beyond our comprehension.
*RS did reference Musk’s computer simulation theory in December 2016.
**RS relentlessly poked fun at Neil Tennant some years ago but to be fair, he may have softened his stance over time. What Has Neil Done to Deserve This? As co-headliners, interesting to note that the two may have crossed paths on the “Road to Primavera”!
So “ironic”?
Imagine if RS roasted Neil onstage during a zesty version of Wrong Number, with Neil within earshot! No, he would *never* do that…😜
