Mixed emotions for all Matildas fans today Proud because of how they pushed a champion team, disappointed to get *so* very close. Top marks to Joe Montemurro 👏 Kudos to Japan. Superb. Their passing/control style is such a lesson. Imagine our spirit paired with that. One day.

Thank you, Australia 💚💛 This #WAC2026 rewrote history, the biggest and most successful yet. On home soil, you turned up in numbers, in voice, and in support. We felt it every step of the way. 👏 #Matildas #HowWeWaltz #TilitsDone #AFCWomensAsianCup

The value and prestige of representing Australia in any sport is enormous. Tony Popovic is absolutely correct to set a hard baseline on this issue.

Throughout the 1970s, 80s, and 90s, an SEC worker travelled all over Melbourne each day along with his Super 8 camera to meticulously document the city's history/events over 30 yrs. All 150+ reels, along with photos/slides have been donated to me. I will digitise and put online.

Fabulous result for @TheMatildas and coach Joe Montemurro. That wasn’t an easy night. So pleased for Sam Kerr to have THAT moment in front of her home crowd. Will have to be better in the final, yes, but it’s not beyond this marvellous group. Go on Tillies. Bring on Saturday.

The Chinese women’s team won the first SEVEN Asian Cups they entered. They didn’t lose once. They’ve won the only Women’s Asian Cup staged in Australia (2006) and are defending WAC champions (2022). Unbeaten in 2026 WAC. Don’t underestimate this test for @TheMatildas tonight.

@aidanfawkes The issue with the old Colac HS site was that it still fell under the remit of Education (not Sport) - with that came an incredibly complex web of simultaneous advocacy and competing interests. But times are changing; the dream of public access to school sites is becoming policy

@sebth Genuinely great to see. I ran around in the Pirron Yallock comp in 2010ish, then was briefly on the committee in 2012 when the club entered in Geelong. Two pitches in town would be transformative. Huge credit to everyone involved for 20-odd years. Unquestionably deserves funding.

Started my first radio show way back in 2003 with the legendary trio of Adam Rowe, Michael Ciccone & Tom Browne. We all loved Dennis Cometti; it wasn’t hard to come up with a name for the show: “Centimetre Perfect” We were far from perfect - but that’s what he was. RIP Dennis

Football starts at home. In Vietnam, it also starts on the street. Light fading rapidly on this Friday night in Hanoi. Match intensifying among these kids. Bottles for goalposts. Serious talent. Shoes optional. Hope we see them one day in a @FIFAWorldCup.

@Ajarncom @JakartaCasual @football_siam Looks fantastic - nice shoutout Phil. This is what we’ve been crying out for! Good luck Simon. All cheering for you. Thai football deserves an English language media presence befitting its status. It’s a fantastic league to watch and follow (especially for a neutral!)

@avineshW90 @giange94 A great footballer who embodies all the great qualities of Harimau Malaya with his spirit, energy and enthusiasm. But I also firmly believe you’re getting someone who will contribute to Malaysian football for the next 40-50 years - not just the next 4 or 5 🇲🇾👏

On a cold, rainy Tuesday night in Hanoi: my first experience of V.League football. Legendary army club Thể Công-Viettel FC vs back to-back champs Thép Xanh Nam Định. The Công overcame a slow start to win 1-0. Great football and an even better atmosphere - marching bands! 🎷

@aleaguemen @CCMariners Chris was a lovely, kind man. One of the old batch of originals from the NSL era who was there trying to bring publicity to the sport in its darkest days. Proud of his Cornish heritage. Passionate about football. A true believer to the end.

.@CCMariners fans unite in a minutes applause to remember founding member Chris Dunkerley, who passed away last week 💛💙 Chris was one of the founding fathers of the Marinators - Central Coast’s original active support group. Our thoughts go out to his friends and family. Vale, Chris 🕊️

Despite being behind, as a boy from Perak, I am proud of what these young boys are doing. Hunger is there, the willingness to fight and trying their best against a stacked Kuala Lumpur side. Say what you want, I am proud of these lads. Keep building is what we need to do.

A hot, humid Sunday in Kuala Lumpur Stadium to see @giange94 lead Kuala Lumpur City against Perak FA in the Malaysian Cup. Giancarlo is a real icon of Malaysian football now. His size and presence on the field can’t be mistaken. KL City trail 2-0 from the first leg. A big task.

Dandenong Stadium remains an obvious play. 30 min train from Caulfield or Pakenham. 20 min drive from Frankston or Ringwood. Crucially, in recent years, the south-east has now developed a distinct identity (wasn’t the case for a long time). Football-friendly demographic, too.
LeonMVFC_04@Leon_Ox

@sebth Dandenong based 12k boutique stadium is a great idea. City could be based there and rebranded as Sth - East Melbourne.

I am only for this idea if it brings about funding for what Melbourne clearly needs: a 10,000-15,000 seat rectangular football venue within walking distance of the CBD. A place that could host so much football content across A-League, Championship and NPL in a right-sized venue.

The time has come. The Australian Open has to find away to start playing tennis over the road at AAMI Park in January. It’s done in the US, playing tennis in bigger stadiums. The AO needs to investigate what’s possible over the road in the same precinct to help spread the load.

Went to the Australian Open opening night to see Sabalenka and Alcaraz It’s hard to describe Melbourne Park. #AO2026 is the only grand slam that truly stops the host city. The entire precinct is a sporting theme park. They’ve taken the spectator experience to a whole new level
