Watching Trump teeter on the edge of blowing up the world economy because of a combination of hubris, strategic incoherence, mendacity and outright stupidity, might be the most extraordinarily depressing thing I have observed in my entire life, or read about in any other period.

@bobmccoskrienz The difference is the mainstream media has checks and balances, makes corrections, and is overseen by bodies such as the Media Council, which you have complained to.

@secondzeit The media did the job. I could list lots and lots of examples. The legacy media are just upset that there’s another player on the field. Doesn’t make it right of course. We should always verify the facts. Just last week Stuff did it with the matai issue.

You will never see a better example by the media of gaslighting and tone-deaf denial of their own track record than this one… “It is unlikely that Hipkins would have felt the need to address the allegations publicly in the pre-social-media age. Absent verification and publication by a media outlet they would have remained as rumours. But in a New Zealand where around 88% of adults have a social media account that becomes less tenable.” 🙄

@bobmccoskrienz There have always been unsubstantiated rumours about politicians' private lives but they couldn't spread as quickly or as widely before social media. It's hard to argue that's a good thing.
