People who for employment must write a certain number of words about a topic of their own choosing every week tend towards speciousness

Columnist M. Gessen has been awarded the 2026 Pulitzer Prize in opinion writing, for "an illuminating collection of reported essays on rising authoritarian regimes that draw on history and personal experience to probe timely themes of oppression, belonging and exile."

Delighted to see @mashagessen honored with the Pulitzer for opinion writing. Fully deserved. Vital commentary in ominous times.

it's quite funny to say this about a culture that- amongst other things keeps meticulous records of every single family tie going back beyond first landing in aotearoa, huge brain on this lad
Apodictator@Apodictator

Māori culture is fake. Does anyone really believe that modern Māori have maintained a culture that is in any way continuous from pre-colonial times? And that it just happens to completely align with modern shitliberalist ideologies?

Scott is 100% correct on this, it's a point that is not well understood today. Those of us of British descent are here largely because our ancestors were Britain's unwanted unemployed, unskilled and underclass, not part of some patriotic ferver to colonise the world and spread...
Scott Hamilton RTM@SikotiHamiltonR

The Nazis lambasting Mooney think British settlers came to NZ out of patriotic zeal, rather than in flight from poverty, highlands enclosures, oppression in Ireland, & the defeat of the Revolt of the Fields. There's a reason the slogan 'A better Britain' was used here.

I don't share his politics but I feel for Southland MP Joseph Mooney, who posted about trade with India & has been inundated with comments by British neo-Nazis who seem to believe NZ is still their colony.

@ZoomerHistorian This is not your country mate, it’s mine and those of us who live here and fight for it every day (and have done for generations). You can take your disgraceful attitude somewhere else.

I get that Brianna Wu does not have the most normal brain function, but I have no idea where she gets the idea that Zohran Mamdani is gay. Does she think anyone who criticizes Israel is secretly gay?

@PaulLambertNZ @GraemeEdgeler Within any given political movement there is a faction who are powerfully incentivised to explain any failed campaign by saying "well obviously we just didn't go hard enough" Where "we" is never the faction who cooked up the theoretical case, but those tasked with executing it

@GraemeEdgeler issues that meet the vibe. I think Trump does a lot of this - he's charismatic, and he has an uncanny knack of putting his finger on issues that people care about (and then often picking the dumbest possible policy response to that issue).

Very funny to know that Farrar and Curia will be having regular meetings with National where they say "So yeah our polling and focus groups continue to show that Luxon is the biggest problem, it's a bit worse again this month, the less the public see of him the better for you."
henry cooke@henrycooke

NEW: National has spent just a few hundred dollars promoting Christopher Luxon videos online this year - but thousands on Nicola Willis
