I’m so tired of ignorant foreigners worshipping China’s railways and bridges.
China’s infrastructure looks great, until you realize almost every single province is bankrupted like pre-2010 Greece, or worse. It’s called ‘local debt’. Think about it: the entirety of China’s savings by ordinary people and firms over decades of economic boom got dumped into these rubbish assets through the government-controlled banking system. Roads and bridges are classic vanity political projects: look good but make no money. To build these on debt is financial suicide. And when local debts become insurmountable, the central government poured even more savings into these irresponsible, default-worthy debts.
Every city on earth can build new bridges, roads and highways if they’re willing to empty their bank accounts and borrow as China did (and able to bulldoze over houses at the government’s will.) Yet, behind every new bridge in China are a bunch of effectively bankrupted families whose bank savings have been completely decimated. They just don’t know it, because - guess what - the government controls information too.

Hard to get cold drinks in Shandong. I once got room temperature beer at a restaurant, from a fridge, while it was -5C outside. I asked the dude to please put the beer OUTSIDE for 10 minutes. After refusing his quick solution to put ice cubes in the beer.

It's 11:30am in Jinan, China. I walk into my favorite lunch spot 3rd time in a row. 5 USD for heaps of meat, veggies, and rice. The white lamp-like object over the plate is actually a camera and scans the food. The software runs computer vision and suggests the types of food present. The cashier then updates the items as needed. Neat use of tech to speed up the process. But the fridge behind him is never on. I bought a drink every day, and it came out room temperature every time (same thing happened at many other places in this city). The juxtaposition of high tech and jankiness everywhere I go is frustrating yet amusing.

@nikstankovic_ Only Qingdao has proper beer culture. Other areas of China dont. My student was so ignorant he went to buy cans of Tsingdao beer in Qingdao. Then I took him to a proper bar in Qingdao where he saw draught beer for the first time in his life! He didn't know what is draught beer!

To be fair the Tsingdao pop-up stores now everywhere sell cold Tsingdao beer on tap into plastic bottles. It's very common, at least in Qingdao, to bring those in to a restaurant.

BREAKING: President Trump says his envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have spoken with a senior Iranian official, with potential "deal" terms emerging, per Axios.
President Trump on potential deal terms:
1. Iran committed not to pursue nuclear weapons or to enrich uranium, and to hand over its existing stockpiles
2. Iran agreed to be "low key on the missiles"
3. Iran also agreed to reopen the strait of Hormuz
4. "If they carry through with that it will end the conflict. They want to make a deal. We want to make a deal too. If this happens it is a great start for Iran to build itself back," Trump said
The US notified Israel on Monday about the peace talks with Iran.
We await comment from Iran.

2) 70% of the students don't speak English at all but get admitted anyway
3) Students don't understand wtf the teacher is saying
4) Parents are concerned and ask the teacher to share his PPTs so they can help the kids review at home
5) Teacher: "No, the kids are supposed to take notes"
6) Parents: "But the kids don't understand what you are saying"
7) Teacher: "Just take notes bro"
8) Over half the class gets an F in all subjects
9) Parents come to me and I hire a non-narcissistic & kind teacher to teach them the stuff they're supposed to learn at school

This is why I hate Lai Chingte: just Saturday he said “Taipower is in the administrative process of [restarting 2 nuclear power plants]. The paperwork’s will be delivered to the regulatory commission by the end of the month.”
Cool! Taiwans nuclear plants are restarting right?
Then today he was asked why the DPP went back on the “no nuclear homeland policy” and he said “no we haven’t! We achieved nuclear homeland last year when Maanshan stopped operation.” Wait. So are we restarting the plants?? “Only if they reach safety, solved nuclear waste problem and have the agreement of the public”
My take on this: he wants to get all the paperwork done and so the nuclear power plants can be as close to ready to go as possible if there is a real calamity, but as long as catastrophic blackouts aren’t happening, he’ll just say “ahhh the consent of the public isn’t there” or some Bs and not do it.
This is NOT how you want to be doing your energy policy.

China's approach toward LNG will fundamentally change after the current energy crisis.
China imported > 84 BCM LNG in 2025 & that cannot continue. LNG supply from Qatar is not secure, nor does China need it.
Expect more pipeline gas, shale gas, green hydrogen & heat pumps to reduce the current reliance on unreliable LNG tankers.

NG Pipeline vs LNG import in 2025 for China: Avg px for Pipeline import is 2.56RMB/kg (2.47 from Russia, 2.51 from Central Asia & 3.92 from Myanmar) -> $278/1000m³ Avg px for LNG was 3.71RMB/kg -> $403/1000m³ Who would rather pay $403 instead of $278 for NG? Especially from area of world that have geopolitical risks like Qatar.
