Nolan sees The Odyssey the same as a Shakespeare film adaptation. Race/sex can be irrelevant. It’s why Denzel can play Macbeth or Don Pedro in Much Ado. Or Harold Perrineau can play Mercutio in Romeo & Juliet. Or Helen Mirren can play Prospero(a). It simply doesn’t matter.

@AwardsDaily In a realistic adaptation it's common to cast a woman with a different origin from everyone else when her character in the book is not even 100% human. Helen was born from an egg whose father is a swan. A clearly distinction on her special origin seems like a screenplay choice

I don’t get the Odyssey controversy. Christopher Nolan isn’t exactly known for woke or out-of-place messaging, and at this point in his career, I doubt there are many studio heads demanding checklist diversity and corporate quotas from him.
