The Eygptian river gunboat Melik sitting on the River Thames in 1897. Melik was one of several gunboats that Egypt ordered from British builders. Once the ships were built and tested, they were then disassembled and shipped to Eygpt for final assembly. There, they would serve in the Nile River, securing the vital waterway. The 135 ton Melik was armed with a 12-pounder gun and a 5inch howitzer along with machine guns. As ambushes at night were a major threat at the time, Melik was equipped with a powerful searchlight, allowing her to illuminate potential threats for her gunners as well as those aboard other gunboats. Upon their arrival in Eygpt, the gunboats immediately steamed up the Nile River to support the ongoing Anglo-Egyptian invasion of Sudan. There, they would prove instrumental. The Anglo-Egyptian soldiers would meet the warriors of the Mahdist State on the banks of the Nile River, allowing the gunboats to provide effective fire support. This tactic would prove extremely effective, breaking up the often larger Mahdist State forces and allowing them to be routed by smaller groups of Anglo-Egyptian soldiers. Following the conquest of Sudan, the gunboats remained in service. They continued prowling up and down the Nile River for years. Melik would be removed from service during the 1920s, eventually finding herself serving as a floating clubhouse (For a local sailing club) She sat like this for the next sixty years until she was carried away by a flood and deposited ashore. The club built a impromptu berth around the ship and continued using her until 1998 when she was taken over by an organization called the National Corporation of Antiquities and Museums (NCAM), a Sudanese effort to preserve cultural artifacts. It's hoped that Melik, one of two surviving gunboats, will be restored and preserved.
