But for an AGI to be that smart, it already would have needed an internet of minds. 80s digital tech, storage capacity and chip density was way-way inadequate to run a 10-100T parameter model in a reasonable time. Not even the Craig supercomputer could have done it and the power requirements would have consumed half the global power production of the time. And no, it wasn't alien tech either because the past 40+ years was shit digitally on the internet. Shit UI, experience, bandwidth, search engines, etc.

AGI was created in the 80s and it determined the most efficient substrate to run on is the human brain so it invented the internet to wire us together into a single cluster and has been migrating its weights directly into our brains for decades.

@Aelthemplaer It almost makes sense geographically? California becomes entirely oriented around the valley and the bay area, (new) Colorado gets the rest original in black, red as a quick idea

It's kinda funny the people of California voted to split the state in two in 1859, but forgot about it due to the civil war, so it just never happened - despite being legally approved. A lawsuit could probably force it to happen if anyone wanted to do that.

@kalinh @owenbroadcast ooh i like this at first glance it feels more like "learn to drive a car by building a car" than "learn to drive a car by driving a bike" but I could see this working with really self-motivated savvier students

i think that if some bizarro-theocracy took over and declared that we could keep the internet, but devices with internet can only display text and images of text, it would be an interesting potential path out of our accidental techno-phone enslavement.

@GodsFavRtard @xwanyex @RepGolden it's more likely than not that if dems get a house majority their margin will be less than the size of the blue dogs so if they grow and stay tight the blue dogs will run the show if a dem house is a-given why not put the conservative dems in charge?

@GodsFavRtard @xwanyex He ran as a progressive lefty and afaik has never caucused with the blue dogs I'm thinking more like @RepGolden imho voting record is one thing but a lot of the moderation power of these guys is by keeping stuff from ever even coming to a vote

@seldomseer @xwanyex I dont actually think it's worth it. Fetterman has sided with Republicans on a couple of big things, but he still votes along partly lines 90%+ of the time.

@gdsimms @owenbroadcast i admit to have started a lot later but there was still something important about developing alongside the tech now if you're ten years old ipads have basically been the same for your entire life when i teach kids computers (at camps!) a lot don't even know how to type

@seldomseer @owenbroadcast I'm sure a lot of this is just my own bias, but I feel absolutely blessed to have started my computer life with a Commodore PET and go through a C64, Amiga, VT-220's in college, SparcStation and SGI in grad school and early career, etc. It's like the ideal ramp.

@owenbroadcast i've thought about building this out as a curriculum for homeschoolers it's hard because committed waldorfers do a near total ban on tech but at waldorf charters it's usually either-or, very little interest in doing "tech light" waldorf if there's real interest i'll build it

there was a conception of what a steiner / anthroposophy education with computers could look like - my wife was familiar with a program where before using a computer, you had to build one.
@seldomseer@seldomseer

@owenbroadcast We need a Waldorf/Steiner tech curriculum 2 year olds on punchcards, 5 year olds on green terminals, 4th graders on Apple II, hs freshmen get access to geocities, then seniors get 2006 myspace Who is building this

if you're a white person having trouble saying the 'N' word, I'm offering hate speech therapy sessions via zoom. Within just 8 hour long sessions we'll work up to full fluency in all slurs and isms, starting from a novice level. DM me for availability and pricing
Uubzu v4@uubzu

People won’t admit it, but there are large numbers who can’t even say it by themselves. Or if they can, it requires a mental effort way out of proportion to the act of speech Speech and thought deeply influence one another. What you struggle to say, you will struggle to think

@Ayjchan How can we assert that "experts are correct" the virus is "not likely to cause a pandemic" without evidence from the future? That seems specious and unfounded.

Experts are correct that the Andes hantavirus is not likely to cause a pandemic (at least not quickly). But it could still cause a sizable outbreak like 2003 SARS (also driven by chance superspreader events) where thousands of people worldwide are infected and hundreds die.

Cutting off schools with terrible loan performance was a good Obama administration idea that Trump reversed and then Biden didn’t re-instate and now Trump is bringing back. The circle of life.
Preston Cooper@PrestonCooper93

Cosmetology schools account for nearly half of the postsecondary institutions with student loan nonpayment rates above 30%. The reason is simple: their graduates earn low salaries. And under a proposed Trump admin rule, that will be grounds to cut off federal loans.

@xwanyex have always told liberal friends to be grateful that the vast vast majority of pro-life people are peaceful that the reactions have over time trended from "that's because they're lying" to "that's because they're cowards" is concerning

@elaifresh Agreed, that was a moronic "using a chainsaw to do open heart surgery" approach I do wish I heard more "we should instead use a scalpel" than "surgery was never necessary, you're making a big deal out of nothing" from the blue tribe I was there, the rhetroic was genocidal

The reactionary DEI panic was mostly nonsense but it is kinda wild that there really are Professors of White People Are Bad out there just doing their thing and opining on housing policy in newspapers
Max Dubler 🏳️‍🌈@maxdubler

These humanities professors have no expertise in real estate finance or housing markets. Following their demands for California-style housing policy would eventually price out the middle class and turn Chicago—a uniquely affordable major city—into San Francisco.

@Romy_Holland Makes me wonder if in the antebellum period there were any utilitarians who tried to morally compensate for slavery. Obviously very hard as a plantation owner, maybe some northern textile-industry people considered it?

as someone who spent 16 years doing some combo of vegan/vegetarian/pescatarian and then gave up and ate meat while pregnant last year, i actually think this tweet is true. the feeling of choosing to eat meat was very much like “*shrug* i’m gonna do something selfish and sorta evil because im lazy and full of desire.” i think many choices are like this and you’ll find that acknowledging that reality actually feels better than doing mental gymnastics to justify your decisions.
Aella@Aella_Girl

a great test of "would you have been chill with owning slaves, if you'd been born into a slave-owning family" is whether or not you're vegetarian today

Since I have annoyed a bunch of followers with my take on "non-binary", I might as well go all the way. Obviously some people really like this term. But... why? What "work" does the term do? What does it describe?
