Federal contracts in Texas are huge. It's one of the highest spend states for government contracts in the country. Federal agencies spent $4.89 billion on contracts in Texas for construction and specialty trades over the past 3 years. Mostly on things like federally-owned hospital construction, troop housing facilities, administrative building projects, and repairs & alterations of federally-owned facilities. 26% of this $$ went to small businesses in this particular industry, in Texas. Interestingly, the top 10 recipients of construction-related federal contracts in Texas accounted for nearly 53% of total contract spends, even though a total of 989 unique firms received awards. 6 of these top 10 awardees are headquartered outside of Texas. Most small, local construction and specialty trades businesses will never touch this market, even though their services are in high demand -- and growing.
