Recently I met a 36 year old ,bright young woman. I was surprised to know that her daughter was married and she also has a grandson. So I was curious to find out how at such a young age,that she was a grandmother. She revealed to me that she was married when she was 12 and in her community it's very common . It just broke my heart . To be honest I wanted to scream my heart out on what happened to her . She seemed quite happy about it but unfortunately she didn't have any idea on how she has been a victim of child marriage and how her childhood crushed under child bearing and domestic chores . She is a Muslim and also she is from Tamilnadu. You know , sometimes we have to face the harsh realities of this state . Child marriages are prevalent among Islamic and Hindu communities and just for the appeasement of both the state stays mum . Doesn't do anything about it . I believe in the human rights of every person of all religions. But I also don't want any oppressed or minority community to take that advantage to oppress their women . It's wrong ! See ...you may be of any religion but you should follow the constitution as we are all children of that. Our equality is guaranteed through our constitution and not through our respective religions . When we say "Indians" we must acknowledge the laws by which we are bound . "We are Indians first and lastly" said BABASAHEB. This is what he meant. The constitution above religion. I urge @CMOTamilnadu to take necessary action to stop child marriages within any religion and take strict action . Gender justice over religious laws . Anytime.
