@JustTryin2GetBy It was frustrating because I was in a position to know what sort of ATIPs would turn up something interesting but those almost never came. It was actually a joy when one did come - "finally I really get to help someone out" kind of idea.

Literally 95% of ATIPs landing on my desk were idiotic fishing expeditions from journos and NGOs looking for the next $16 glass of OJ on an expense claim. I was paid to waste taxpayers' money responding to this nonsense.

@EmmaMci @mattgurney It was 20y ago, straight out of uni on a temp job. It was a frustrating job and I left within a yr, never to return to gov't. But the ATIP stuff stands out b/c of just how pointless most were. Like file an ATIP on retreats to Montebello if you want to find something interesting.

@JustTryin2GetBy Vanishingly few civvies break the rules. That's not where the waste is. The waste is within the rules themselves. Like all the retreats being booked at Montebello, all the 'legit' expenses claimed within those rules. There's plenty for ATIPs to find but not in rule breaking.

@JustTryin2GetBy This was 20y ago. It was a temp job less than 1y. I've not been back since. It was a highly frustrating work environment in many ways but I found the ATIP stuff particularly so - it was supposed to shed light on gov't and instead it was used to fish for 'gotcha's.

@mattgurney There seems to be a general malaise within Canadian government institutions when it comes to responding to Canadians (and not just to ATIP requests or CRA enquiries) be they journalists or private citizens. It can't all be resource shortages or workload, but something deeper.

Quite like this. I'm not a fan of Poilievre but this is definitely the part of his persona he needs to expose more. It's possible to imagine Carney making a similar speech; it's impossible to imagine Trudeau doing so. That we have two leaders who now could is a welcome change.
