In The Times: "It was a quiet year for cricket books, but arguably the best is Elephant in the Stadium, by Arunabha Sengupta, which is a social history and as much about the legacy of colonialism as it is about India’s first Test series win in England in 1971." - Alyson Rudd.

@cricketingview Brearley (great captain) has a positive Ashes record because the one he lost 0-3 was not counted as Ashes, and the Packer-depleted series he won 5-1 was. And then there was the Botham 1981 series which will see another 20 publications on it by the time the next Ashes takes place.

The last AUS captain to have led AUS in >1 Ashes series and have losing Ashes record (i.e., lost more Tests v ENG and they won) was Bill Lawry (1968, 1970/71). In those 55 years, the only winning ENG captains Illingworth, Brearley, Gatting and Strauss. 1/2

The best trolls are the subtlest ones. The great cheerleader did not do himself any favours by suggesting the great revolution be amputated at the Ball. But the response was 🙌👌 #bazball #Ashes2025

Perhaps "abject surrender", "digging one's own grave" and "writing one's own obituary" are part of the Revolution Manifesto. But then, a chancy win on a lottery pitch & a defeat reduced to a 5-wkt margin are perhaps enough to flip 1-4 into "Glorious Retreat" #Ashes2025 #bazball

Pushing a Test into the 5th day & putting up something that resembles a fight when viewed from a distance, England will keep believing The #Ashes remains the greatest rivalry in cricket. 37 more books on past Ashes by 2027 -35 about Eng wins - will help things along. #Ashes2025

@AnnieChave Maybe it's that wistful end of season feeling, but September's CCM captures what the game means in so many different contexts. Every single article is so well written and thought provoking, but Arunabha Sengupta's piece is a masterpiece.

@tintin1107 @fredfertang The other way of negotiating them was also idiosyncratic... going on a self-imposed sabbatical when the peaks of WI-Aus pacers coincided.

@fredfertang Idiosyncratic technique or stance seems to be common among the English batsmen who succeeded against West indies / Australia of that time - Greig, Knott, Willey, Gooch, Amiss with an open stance.

He didn't care who was bowling, it was always front foot forward for David Steele and in 1975 and 1976 his idiosyncratic technique blunted the likes of Dennis Lillee, Jeff Thomson, Andy Roberts, Michael Holding and Wayne Daniel time and again

His name is rarely mentioned when fans and pundits discuss the greatest opening batsmen, but it's worth taking a glance down the list of highest averages among those with 50+ innings at the top of the order... 61.10 Herbert Sutcliffe 56.47 Len Hutton 56.37 Jack Hobbs 55.51 Bob Simpson A couple of other less heralded-names are also among the top few: Dennis Amiss (53.70) is fifth and Simon Katich (50.48) seventh, while there are plenty more feted but lower in the list.

RIP Australian cricketer & coach Bobby Simpson. He played in 62 Test matches for Australia scoring 4,869 runs at 46.81 win 10 tons. He also took 71 wickets at 42.26. His highest score was 311 v England at Manchester in 1964. He led his country 1963-68 & then again 1977-78.
