@ACScricket I thought I'd read that Mushtaq (who'd been playing when his brother got 499) was working in Birmingham in 1994 and rushed to Edgbaston when it became clear that Lara might break record.

Woolmer is the owner of a cricketing coincidence as they only person known to have watched both the two highest FC innings. His father was working in Karachi, and dropped the 11 year old Woolmer at the ground where he reported at the end of the day's play "Someone got 499, Dad". 35 years later, he was coaching Warwickshire when Brian Lara was 285* at lunch on the last day, in a dead match with no reason not to let him bat on. Lara casually asked Woolmer what the FC record score was, to which the coach replied "499. You're not going for that?"

Bollywood star & pop singer Haardy Sandhu was well qualified to play Madan Lal (see last post) in the film ‘83’ as he began life as a cricketer. He played 3 matches for Punjab in 2005 taking 12 wickets at 26.00 with a best of 6/134. He was a right arm paceman. #cricketcounts

What this irrefutably shows is that you have to go back to the 1890s and the first decade of last century to find lower batting averages.

Here is another take: strike-rates in the Sheffield Shield were heading up BEFORE the advent of the BBL:

Ekki as he was fondly called, came from a very humble family. He learnt his basics of cricket at Hindu Gymkhana, Mumbai. His brother Anant was also a cricketer and played Ranji Trophy. Ekki's humility showed in the way he played the game, the way he interacted with everyone and even as a coach in later years. His maiden and only Test Century came in 1976 at Wankhede Stadium. He was the first Indian centurion at Wankhede. Our childhood icon esp because of the exceptional fielding on Chandrasekhar's bowling that won us our first series victory in England 1971. My humble tributes to a wonderful cricketer and human being 🙏🏽

On 18th March 1948, India’s great short-leg fielder Eknath Solkar was born. He took 53 catches in 27 Tests the best ratio for any non wicket-keeper playing over 20 Tests. Virtually all of them were at short-leg. He sadly died in 2005, at 57 years of age. #cricketcounts

@ACScricket He broke his arm in the nets the day before the start of the 1975 Prudential World Cup and was replaced. He was in good form that year. See with me here in Delhi in 2003.

Happy St Patrick's Day! Here is what I believe to be (one) of the earliest account of cricket in Ireland, a match between the Garrison of Dublin and All Ireland in Phoenix Park in 1792

It is 30 years ago today that Sri Lanka won the 1996 ODI World Cup beating Australia by 7 wickets in Lahore. They had schooled England & India on the way. Aravinda de Silva was Man of the Match with 107*, 3 wickets & 2 catches. It was if it was yesterday. #cricketcounts
