One thing I learned recently is that when you’re cooking, you can execute a recipe perfectly and still have the dish not turn out the same each time.
Jiu-Jitsu techniques are often the same way.
Just because you learn a move in class doesn’t mean that when you try it live that it will work for you.
There are factors outside of your control and execution that can impact your results.
- Your partners size
- Your size
- Fatigue
- Being sweaty
And more.
The idea that “fundamental” Jiu-Jitsu works the same for everyone isn’t just wrong, it’s misleading. Yet still, this is what most coaches do.
They show what works for them and expect the execution to be identical for you.
Instead of teaching people to download moves, we should be teaching them how to understand Jiu-Jitsu and the key components of doing it well.
