This is a bummer. Starlight Revolver isn't perfect, but I had fun with it. There's a lot of room for asking "what went wrong?" when a story like this breaks, and we may never have all the answers, but at the end of the day there are fewer people making games. I think that sucks.

Conversely, Call of Duty Black Ops 7 is $70. This is a bit more than it would cost to go to Chili's with my girlfriend. Especially now that skillet queso is back, there's no way in hell I'm giving up Chili's to buy the new Call of Duty. This is more or less the value proposition.

Another good way to look at this is "what non-game thing could I get instead?" Vampire Survivors and its DLC are $2-5 each, about the price of a McChicken. Unless I'm dying of hunger, I will gladly sacrifice a potential McChicken to get more Vampire Survivors.

the more time goes by, the more sense it’s starting to make for me to maybe remake my ace combat 7 video -extremely easy to film and edit compared to other videos and I have access to new camera tech -new entry in a year -the entire theme about AI and drone warfare is completely recontextualized 5 years later -I have the ability to get a giant voice cast on the project which is always fun -5 years is a long enough time to want to revisit an old game lol -I kinda want to do a project with more catharsis in it on top of humor

3. I believe it is possible to enjoy a game and be deeply disappointed by decisions made in its creation such as genAI use, and important to be critical of those decisions even while praising the work as a whole. I plan on saying a bunch of nice things about E33 soon. Merry Xmas.

This won't get nearly as many views, but I want to clarify my thoughts. 1. Generative AI has not shown benefits significant enough to justify its costs. 2. I believe Broche's claim that, after the expunged AI placeholders' removal, no genAI content exists in E33. Cont'd...

Battlefield
Battlefield@Battlefield·
We are heartbroken by the loss of Vince Zampella, a creative leader whose work shaped generations of players and helped define what modern shooters and action games could be. Across a remarkable career, Vince played a foundational role in franchises including Call of Duty, Titanfall, Apex Legends, and the Star Wars Jedi series. During his time guiding Battlefield, he led with care and purpose, always grounding decisions in what mattered most to the community and the long-term future of the franchise. While his impact reached far beyond any one game or studio, we will remember Vince for how he showed up every day, trusting his teams, encouraging bold ideas, and believing in Battlefield and the people building it. We are deeply grateful for his leadership, his generosity, and the care he brought to everything he touched, and we will carry that forward with us.

@dave_at_hat You're right - I haven't, because working with generative AI wasn't relevant to my role. I think you'd find people more willing to hear you out if you took a less accusatory tone with them.

@serothel I have better examples than just "improvements". You seriously underestimate the capacity of AI for texturing and I doubt you ever used it for more than 2 mins. Example of asking Gemini to create a table, then replace the bed with the table for this little background.

@serothel @StartWaiting I'm a game developer and I use AI to curate textures. It's a powerful tool, so powerful that I have to cut down on new ideas to avoid scope creep. AI only "looks like shit" if you're shit at using it. Sorry to say but it's true. AI is just a tool, you can't blame the tool.

@dave_at_hat @StartWaiting I feel emboldened because I worked on Stormgate, and every time AI art was added to a build, it was obviously AI and looked like shit. Some got cut, some shipped anyway. Happy to have a conversation if you're willing to come from a place of less aggression.

@serothel @StartWaiting And you're wrong. Your opinion matters less than shit. You feel emboldened because there's a lot of dumb people on twitter liking your posts. Your argument falls as soon as you talk to actual professionals.

@HoegLaw It wasn't intended in bad faith. If I've misinterpreted Valve's rules on the subject, that's my mistake. I do believe there's a murky gray area as no two people may agree on what is or isn't "okay" use of gen AI. Appreciate the informed pushback in any case.

This is bad faith. For the most part Valve is concerned with Gen AI content as provided “in game”. (The only thing they ask for wrt ‘workflow’ is verification that a devs process does not infringe). No indication Sandfall is violating Valve’s rules.

@Helthurian I agree that many studios probably are - I've witnessed it firsthand - but I still believe in pushing back on it. The sky-high price of RAM and egregious use of water in AI data centers doesn't discriminate on whether a studio's use of AI is good or bad, ethical or not.

I would be shocked if every mid to large dev isn't using genAI the same ways Larian and Sandfall did. The battle of using genAI at all is lost. Care more about how it's used and to what extent. Both parties seemed to use it minimally.

@serothel @1bluean Accidental placeholder AI left over is the same as intentionally telling artists to get recked? Just say you're one of those JRPG purist haters that don't like e33

@illusion____X Yes. "It's concerning ... that [E33] didn't do so." I'm in favor of requiring games that use AI to disclose that to players. The concerning part is that E33 shipped with genAI assets - intentionally or not - and made use of AI assisted workflows and didn't disclose it.
