Lakewood Police Dept.@LakewoodPDCO
To the Lakewood community,
This is an important update regarding the Police Department’s efforts to address crime in the community.
In the last decade, in response to nationwide calls to reform how communities are policed, the Lakewood Police Department piloted new programs and philosophies to address quality of life issues. Much of this has been successful – the Community Action Team as a primary example. Lakewood has reduced recidivism, made lasting change in peoples’ lives, and built bridges with law enforcement and non-law enforcement community partners.
Part of being innovative is stepping back to examine the results of the department’s work and identify where further change needs to be made. Drug possession, use, and associated crimes occurring in public is one of those areas. Meeting with community members has made it clear the toll this has taken. Drug possession and use, especially when done in public, degrades community confidence in public safety. City parks go unused, businesses struggle, and public rights-of-way become impassible for those trying to live, work, and play in our community.
For these reasons, the Lakewood Police Department is committed to identifying innovative enforcement strategies surrounding open drug use, drug possession, and associated crimes. Lakewood will also vigorously pursue those who deal drugs in the community. This is a whole agency effort, and progress will be tracked. As community members, you can expect to see increased enforcement efforts and a visible improvement in public spaces.
