The search for something can prove as interesting as finding it... You may already be aware of the hand-drawn, 1/1 art collection @OrdinalMaxiBiz by @ohareyoufat consisting of four different colours: red, blue, green and orange. Each of these have their own meanings which we can delve into further. In February 2023, we saw the OMB red eyes being inscribed, representing some of the earliest hand-drawn 1/1 artworks on Bitcoin. After, the OMB blue eyes were introduced with the growing interest of "sat hunting" thanks to @nullish. For those unaware, this is the process of continuously withdrawing money from an exchange in search of rare or valuable sats. The blue eyes are artworks on Block 78 (the first block mined by someone other than Satoshi Nakamoto) which was mined by @halfin, Nakamoto's collaborator and the first person to receive a Bitcoin transaction. As "sat hunting" became increasingly popular, @nullish set out a task to find the earliest retrievable Bitcoin in circulation, that being from Block 9. In June 2023, both @ZK_shark and @nullish surprised us by stealth inscribing the OMB green eyes. This series was the first PFP artwork inscribed on Block 9 sats, mined by Satoshi Nakamoto and used in the first ever transaction to take place on Bitcoin. Nullish helped pioneer "sat hunting" and was the first to isolate sats from Block 9 which were used when inscribing OMB. Come February 2024, an entire year after the red eyes were introduced, the orange eyes were sequentially inscribed during the Super Bowl LVIII, also on the oldest ever Block 9 sats to be inscribed on at the time. The artworks consist of many historical and cultural references to our lives both on and off-chain. Take some time to view the collection and I am sure you will find something that speaks to you. For more information, feel free to read the following substack below, written by both ZK and Nullish as well as browsing through all 1/1 artworks from OMB 👇🏼 zkshark.substack.com/p/ordinals-ins… ord.io/collection/omb

The @TaprootWizards are working to bring back a historical aspect in #Bitcoin called 'OP_CAT'. What in the gmeow is this? 👇🏼🪄 OP_CAT, short for "opcode concatenate", is a programming command that simply combines two elements, akin to merging them together. In simpler terms, envision a stack as a vertical arrangement of items. When we execute this opcode, it requests the top item from the stack and the item just below it, perhaps named 'Udi' and 'Eric'. These items are extracted, fused together and then placed back onto the stack. Consequently, the stack now holds a single item, which is an amalgamation of both, Udi-Eric. While this may initially appear trivial, it possesses significant potential for enabling a wide range of intriguing applications. --- So how can OP_CAT make #Bitcoin magical again? One application is the concept of "covenants", which represent a compelling innovation that could greatly enhance Bitcoin. Essentially, they empower the sender of tokens to impose restrictions on how the recipient can spend them. For now, when I send BTC to someone like Louis, Louis has complete freedom to spend those funds as he sees fit. As far as we know, it is generally impossible for me to limit Louis' spending, except in rare instances involving time locks. For instance, I could send funds to Louis with the condition that he is only permitted to transfer them to Udi or myself. This capability is not currently available but OP_CAT makes it feasible. This leads us to the concept of 'vaults', which are specialised covenants that help us custody our Bitcoin much better. Moreover, OP_CAT opens up intriguing possibilities in the realm of quantum computing. By incorporating 'Lamport Signatures', which are resilient against quantum computer attacks, Bitcoin can be safeguarded against potential threats from quantum computing. This ensures your bitcoins remain secure in a world where quantum computing becomes a reality. Lamport what? Yes, that's right, a Lamport signature is a way to create a digital signature for a message or piece of data, but it's designed to be extremely secure against future attacks by powerful quantum computers - we have to thank Leslie for this one! Here's how it works in a nutshell... 1. Imagine you have a secret pair of keys: a private key and a corresponding public key. 2. The private key is a long list of randomly generated numbers (0s and 1s), like a binary code. 3. To create a signature for a message, you pick specific numbers from your private key based on the content of the message. You use those selected numbers to generate a unique signature. 4. The generated signature is a list of 0s and 1s that proves you are the owner of the private key and that the message hasn't been tampered with. 5. The public key, which is derived from your private key, can be used by others to verify the signature. They can check if it matches the message and confirms that you indeed signed it. The uniqueness of Lamport signatures lies in their resistance to attacks from quantum computers. Traditional digital signatures could become vulnerable to quantum computers in the future, but Lamport signatures are designed to remain secure even in that scenario. --- Lastly, OP_CAT has the potential to facilitate the creation of more robust bridges between different networks, such as Layer 2 solutions or other blockchains. These bridges can leverage the capabilities of covenants and other functionalities introduced by developers to establish safer connections across various blockchain ecosystems. However, despite all the magic, there are also causes for concern against integrating OP_CAT. "Several opcodes, including OP_CAT were disabled by Satoshi Nakamoto in 2010, over concerns about potential vulnerabilities affecting the young and fragile network. Satoshi worried it might be used to launch a denial-of-service (DoS) attack, for instance." - Blockworks 2024 Security Concerns OP_CAT's functionality could be used in ways that might pose security risks to the network. Concatenating arbitrary data could lead to unintended consequences or vulnerabilities. Complexity OP_CAT, although only around 10 lines of code, adds complexity to Bitcoin's scripting language, making it harder to analyse and understand the potential behaviours of transactions. These complex scripts could introduce uncertainties and increase the risk of unintentional bugs or vulnerabilities. Overloading Nodes The Bitcoin network aims to keep transaction sizes manageable and codes like OP_CAT could potentially lead to larger transactions and block bloat. --- The @TaprootWizards team aims to bring back OP_CAT and enhance Bitcoin's capabilities by making a relatively simple change to Bitcoin core code, involving only around 10 lines of code. This modification would involve a soft fork rather than a hard fork. A soft fork is a backward-compatible upgrade to the Bitcoin protocol, making it less disruptive and contentious than a hard fork. Enabling OP_CAT through a soft fork would mean that older nodes can still function within the network, but they would not be able to use the new opcode. This approach helps maintain network stability and continuity while introducing new functionality for those who choose to upgrade their nodes. The last soft fork occurred in 2021, with the activation of Taproot, which paved the way for the creation of Ordinals. The revival of OP_CAT could support projects like 'BitVM' by expanding Bitcoin's functionality. BitVM could leverage OP_CAT to create more versatile and expressive smart contracts within the Bitcoin ecosystem. We have already seen the likes of Bitcoin Cash and some other Bitcoin forks embrace OP_CAT's revival, which demonstrates that there is interest in exploring this opcode's potential applications. Ultimately, OP_CAT represents a groundbreaking development, offering a versatile toolset for implementing innovative features, enhancing security and expanding the possibilities of building on Bitcoin. Whether those innovations are realised through BitVM or other yet to be conceived constructs remains to be seen, but one thing is certain, OP_CAT is poised to unlock new realms of experimentation and design to make Bitcoin magical again. --- We're excited to see what the @TaprootWizards team bring with @quantumcats and I'd like to thank my team members both @louismines and @c_b4927 for helping complete this quest! #ImDed #OP_CAT_IS_DEAD --- For more information on aspects mentioned in this post, please check out the following links below: OPCODES #Opcodes" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Script#Op… Blockworks Interview w/ @udiWertheimer blockworks.co/news/op-cat-bi… Quantum Resistant Bitcoin coingeek.com/quantum-resist… Soft Forks investopedia.com/terms/s/soft-f….
