It was fantastic to witness how the @philincon_ field and ranger teams are working to protect the forest. Myself & @RicardoLFig were very lucky to join them on a recent survey, where we recorded four Critically Endangered Visayan warty pigs on a camera trap! 🐗🐗🐗🐗

Our conservation team has been working with Bénoué National Park to survey its wildlife and help direct anti-poaching patrols 📸 Initial camera trap images show at least 30 mammal species to be present, including western hartebeest and African forest buffalo!

Headline stat is "Having accounted for other intervention effects, total dehorning was estimated to reduce poaching by 75% from pre-dehorning levels" although it notes that further research is needed

Interesting to see some empirical evidence showing that dehorning rhinos can reduce poaching rates. Despite its wide-spread practise there have been few studies that have looked at its success as a conservation measure -

Some eye-opening results from our population modelling of Kordofan giraffe in Cameroon's Bénoué National Park. It really highlights the urgency and importance of conservation work within one of the few areas that this subspecies still roams @BrisZooSociety
University of Bristol@BristolUni

Without intervention, the poaching of two Critically Endangered Kordofan giraffes per year could result in local extinction in just 15 years. Our @Bristol_Vets partnered with @BrisZooSociety to understand the threat these incredible animals are facing.🦒 👉fal.cn/3AsLg
