@shackletonjones That was the what the drama portrayed. It's complex, with factors such as increased reporting, not just more crime, rape gangs also significant and so on. Reducing this to a 13 year old nerd killing a girl with a knife because he watched an Andrew Tate video is 100% a straw boy.

I’ll say it. I didn’t like the drama ‘Adolescence’. Are we saying that the root of knife crime is shy 13-year-old boys who spend most of their time in bedrooms, and end up killing girls? Of all the deaths from knives over the years, can't think of one of that type.

@DonaldClark Well, you’re straw-manning it a bit now, but look: Sexual assaults of women are on the rise, some estimates have 1/4 women victim at some time. For all forms of violent assault 95-99% are by men. It’s good to ask ‘where is it coming from?’ No-one is answering ‘nerdy 13yr olds’

@shackletonjones We're pathologising everything, in this case, watching an an influencer... who has no current presence. Then frame a generation of 13 year old nerdy boys as being potential killers - that's crazy.

@shackletonjones Yes. But blatantly false. As my son said... these kids are not knifing girls to death - they're shy and can barely look at a girl at that age.

@DonaldClark Yeah, but that was the point I guess: make it any minority demographic & it’s not ‘our’ problem - it’s ‘theirs’. I think the meanest thing I could say about it is that it’s the longest Public Service Announcement I’ve ever watched.

@DonaldClark I mean the shots are an hour long; anyone screws up & you have to start again. It see a familiar tale of an angry young man & a contemporary twist where he’s radicalized online for profit. For me it’s about how tech can be used to harvest our kids’ lives from within our homes

@DonaldClark I’ve got less patience for people who blame others’ for their shortcomings: men whining about loneliness, loafers blaming immigrants. Always respected hard work whatever the class.

@DonaldClark Technically it’s great. The acting is good, the themes important. I generally see worse at the cinema. I’m not sure I envy grads: up to their eyeballs in debt for a degree they’ll never use, in jobs soon to be replaced by AI: plumbing - not so much.

@DonaldClark We see different things when we see the same things. It didn’t occur to me that it was about ‘working class’ folk, nor white folk, nor northern folk. It seems to me like a tale of how kids can be shaped by what they experience online, rather than at home or at school.

@shackletonjones I spoke to my lads about this programme. It's a topic we've discussed often. They are pretty sick of the demonisation of young working class boys like this. They are piled upon. It has to stop.

@DonaldClark Not a fan of demonization; there is a rise in misogynistic attitudes amongst young UK men & SoMe is a contributing factor. Probably you took time to talk to your lads about what they see online, I think this is a reminder for more parents to do the same theguardian.com/news/2024/feb/…

@lumilaulu2 @politicsusa46 Did Americans unite? Or just conform? When Russia invaded Ukraine Polish people drove to the border in their 1000s to offer food & supplies. In the coming months 1M+ Ukrainians were welcomed, many into people’s homes. Are Americans uniting to stop Ukrainians being expelled now?

@politicsusa46 @shackletonjones This ignores how quickly Americans can focus on a common enemy through propaganda. I saw it happen before the Iraq war and the invasion of Afghanistan. There is a deep belief in exceptionalism - and I think Americans will support territory expansion.
