There is an inverse relationship in youth sports between focusing on winning and developing players.
You cannot do both optimally at the same time.
The more you prioritize winning, the less resources you have to dedicate towards development.
The adult desire to win puts a focus on structure & schemes, wasting valuable (and already limited) practice time that could be better spent in dynamic skill building environments.
It breeds early positional specialization which limits well rounded development opportunities for all kids.
It forces young kids into a performance mindset that inhibits creativity & risk taking.
Long term growth is sacrificed for short term results.
Remember, selection bias is what creates the illusion that players on youth ‘elite’ teams are developing at faster rate than they otherwise could be in an environment that prioritizes development.

If coaches were truly looking into getting players ready for the next age group they would be emphasizing competitive contact at 8U and all the ages above. That along with on ice awareness instead of cones drills. One checking clinic makes money not kids ready for full check.

@spittinchiclets No contact till later years of minor hockey now. They’re not learning any of the fundamentals. We would go to a specific hockey school to learn how to give and receive hits before starting contact. We’re going backwards.

At a cold rink at 8 AM on Super Bowl Sunday & witnessing one of the biggest issues in hockey…unnecessarily shortening the bench…at a recreational 12U hockey game
Not AAA..
Not AA..
Not A..
Not B..
Not Rec Select..
Not Recreational Championship game..
Not Recreational Playoff Game..
A recreational regular season game….
The 5 “Travel Select” players make up 30% of the roster….and were given over 60% of the ice time…so you can win a game on a Sunday AM….
This is why kids quit hockey…
This is why kids don’t become life long fans…
This is why kids don’t want to play hockey instead of iPad..
We need to do better as coaches…these are kids..let them play…let them grow…let them love the game
Because at the end of the day there is only one “Big Game” today…and it’s in Vegas!

Hockey Sense Before Systems
Article by: Michael Rand
"From a practice design standpoint, we need to give (10U players) more opportunities to read the information that they will need to read in the game to solve the problem,”

All parents - this is a must listen.

It is clear that the denouement of Kyle and Job's article on distinguishing skill and technique STILL rings true:
"Despite decades of research on this topic, many sporting practitioners and researchers confuse, conflate, or equate technique and skill."

The best day! I could watch that footage of my brother, @ClayMatthews52 , forcing that fumble ALL DAY LONG! As the late Kevin Green said to him right before, “It’s time”.
