When I rig some non-shearable items (like shoe laces) being deformed along the surface I prefer using chains of bones placed along such structures instead of just copying weights - in sake of better volume and shape preservation. To quickly add the Armature Constraint to all the bones in the chain I use a simple Python script that finds the nearest vertex for each of the bone and converts the vertex weights to the Armature Constraint weights. #blender #b3d #rigging #Python

The geometry, material and everything else is the same for both sides as the right side was symmetrized from the left one. The poses are not fully symmetrical in some parts of the video and this probably doesn't give a good point to properly evaluate the symmetry of the mesh. By "non-shearable" I mean the ability to deform by only one axis (in this particular case - by the lenght of the lace)

@shapiro_rigs Why are shoe laces non-shearable? the right render seems more natural I admit, but is it really because of this fact? perhaps it is because they are of a different material (requiring different deformations). The geo and topo (left/right) are different too, so it is hard to tell.

You can do it quite fast even without a script: 1) select some edge loop going throught the whole lace 2) convert it to curve 3) add some bone and subdivide it e.g. 100 times 4) add Spline IK constraint to this chain with a curve as a target 5) apply Pose as Rest Pose 6) skin your mesh to this chain (automatic weights work most of the time for such objects)

@japanesus_ It is a preveiew of a level 2 subdiv. So the density of a real topology is much lower. Also in my rigs I always have sliders to turn off all the smooth deformers, subdiv and shrinkwraps. As for my own specs I work at Asus Zephyrus G16 laptop: i9-13900H, 32 GB RAM, Nvidia4060 6GB
