قصته هي:
طوال سنوات الحرب الأهلية عرفت شوارع بيروت الغربية متسولاً أخرس، أشعث، حافياً، عفيف على فقره: يقبل رغيف الخبز ويرفض الربطة، يقبل السيجارة ويرفض العلبة. لا اسم له سوى «الأخرس»، ما آذى أحداً، وما نام تحت سقف قط.
نومه في العراء لم يكن بؤساً، بل موقع عمل: كان يفترش الأرصفة قرب مقرات الثورة الفلسطينية، يرصد اجتماعات القادة وتحركات المقاتلين ومخازن السلاح، ويرسل الإحداثيات التي كان الطيران الإسرائيلي يقصف على أساسها
هذا ما شهد به لاحقاً زياد ربايعة، مرافق عرفات.
وفي اجتياح 1982، تقول الرواية المتداولة، توقفت أمامه مصفحة إسرائيلية، ترجّل منها مقدم وأدى له التحية العسكرية: «أحييكم سيدي العقيد.. فلولاكم ما دخلنا بيروت». فردّ الأخرس التحية وقال بالعبرية مازحاً: «لقد تأخرتم قليلاً»، وصعد المصفحة أمام عيون الحي الذي أطعمه سبع سنين.
عقيد إسرائيلي عاش بين الناس متسولاً لا ينطق، ولم يشكّ فيه أحد. قصته بقيت في ذاكرة البيروتيين خلاصة لحرب كان فيها العدو أقرب مما يتصور الجميع.
