26 July 1856. George Bernard Shaw was born in Dublin. He wrote more than 60 plays including Man and Superman, Saint Joan and Pygmalion (later turned into the musical My Fair Lady). He was also the 1st writer to win a Nobel Prize (1925) and an Oscar (1938).

@DavidCloke @Baerenreiter You should visit Malvern where Elgar lived. The Shaw Festival was held between 1929-39 Elgar dedicated his brass band piece, the Severn Suite (Opus 87), to Bernard Shaw as a token of their friendship

@Baerenreiter He had a surprisingly close relationship with Elgar in the last decade or so of the composer’s life. Indeed, I believe that he persuaded the BBC to commission the third symphony.

Did you know that George Bernard Shaw worried that the alphabet was a barrier to social mobility and wanted to create a new one? The Irish playwright, author, critic and socialist reportedly established two posthumous ‘Alphabet Trusts’ to pay for the creation of a novel 40-letter phonetic alphabet. Twelve years after Shaw died his wish was brought to life thanks to creation of a new Shavian alphabet to his specification by Kingsley Read. Today you can learn his alphabet and read the great playwright’s version of the fable 'Androcles and the Lion' in the alphabet he desired. George Bernard Shaw was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1925 "for his work which is marked by both idealism and humanity, its stimulating satire often being infused with a singular poetic beauty."
