It is surreal driving past Stonehenge on this sunny Sunday. Stonehenge is a prehistoric stone circle standing for over 4,000 years, it is one of the most iconic archaeological sites in the world. We grew up in Zimbabwe reading about it in primary school books, and to now pass it in real life feels almost unreal, history stepping out of book pages and into the present. It is so iconic, and yet it does not compare to Great Zimbabwe. Both are powerful symbols of ancient civilisation, but they differ greatly in scale, purpose and historical context. Stonehenge is older than Great Zimbabwe, but Great Zimbabwe is even more remarkable in terms of its construction, complexity and what it represents. Like Great Zimbabwe, Stonehenge is a mysterious ritual site, powerful in its symbolism and alignment with the cosmos. However, Great Zimbabwe was a full civilisation, a seat of trade, power, governance and culture, encompassing spirituality within a living society. It is remarkable how countries hold such important historical sites, and it is something everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.
