Many in our media are finally waking up to the unspeakable horrors that Palestinians are enduring in Gaza. It is too late. Israel inflicted these horrors because they were encouraged to do so, in part by a media class that failed to treat all human life with equal worth.

Yoav Gallant admitted that the Hannibal Directive was implemented on October 7th, which allowed for the Israeli military to kill civilians to prevent them from being taken as hostages. Never forget that the mainstream media in the US, UK, and EU thought you were stupid enough to believe that the militia of a concentration camp with light weapons, improvised rockets, and no air force, was capable of this level of destruction and carnage. While independent and alternative media outlets covered every admission of the implementation of the Hannibal Directive by Israeli soldiers and military officials, mainstream media refused to cover it, called the reports conspiracy theories, or outright omitted any mention of the Hannibal Directive from their coverage.

For the past year, millions of us around the world have made repeated, desperate calls for a ceasefire. We demanded an end to the genocide. We warned of a disastrous regional conflict. We were ignored. Governments have fuelled the machinery of war. Their indifference to human life has destroyed prospects for peace and endangered us all. All of this violence was entirely avoidable. Without urgent de-escalation, more unimaginable horror is on the horizon. It’s time to listen to the voices of ordinary people across the globe calling for peace. That means ending the root cause of this appalling cycle of violence: the occupation of Palestine.

The world could have stopped the genocide in Gaza. Instead, our political leaders allowed Israel to act with total impunity. That is why they are now murdering hundreds of civilians in Lebanon, putting millions more lives across the region at risk. When will our government wake up to the horrors they have normalised? When will they call out this reckless aggression? Or do Arab lives not matter? We need a full arms embargo to Israel and economic sanctions, now. Our common humanity demands nothing less.

As long as there are Israelis like Gaia, there is hope.
