Truly look at both lists and you’ll notice that almost all of those players are 26 or under. The whole basis for not handing out a big second contract to RBs is that statistically speaking they’re VERY likely last their prime.

But with how the NFL is treating the running back position now, the future greats at the position growing up right now will choose to change positions rather than be exploited by NFL decision makers. It is true that the game has evolved and production from the running back position can be found in many different ways, but RBs are still CRUCIAL to winning and special ones still make it A LOT easier. RBs do what WRs, TEs and O-Lineman do combined by running the rock, catching it and protecting the QB. THAT HAS MASSIVE VALUE. The backs that have proven they are SPECIAL have earned the guaranteed money they are seeking and NFL decision makers need to stop hosing them in negotiations just because they can.
