Here's a radical idea for cutting the welfare budget, have big employers like Tesco pay their staff a living wage , so they don't have to claim benefits. Tax payers should not be subsidising Tesco and the like!

The boss of Tesco pays himself nearly eleven million quid a year while up to half his staff are so badly paid that they have to claim in-work benefits. Then politicians wonder why people are so pissed off these days.

Train was due to leave Southampton at 11:15 to get into Manchester at 3:30. It’s now 16:36 and I’m stuck in Birmingham, I’ve switched trains and had to buy a new ticket, but now this is held up too. Chaos. Years of profit extraction have done this.

This is classic Whitehall. ‘Delivery’ - or as taxpayers would call it, ‘do your (expletive!) job’ - should be the focus of everyone in government. But no. Designate a new, additional sub-team who can be the fall guys for failure. Those lanyards aren’t gonna wear themselves!

@darrenpjones Wow. More bureaucracy. Groundbreaking. How many additional civil servants and management layers are you going to introduce? It’s pretty incredulous that the civil service is larger than ever before and yet delivery isn’t a part of it. Easy to see why our taxes are so high

Each department in government will now have its own delivery unit, led by a senior civil servant. And every Secretary of State and Minister of State will be given a new “delivery advisor” in their private office to support this work. These new delivery functions will be accountable to both their Secretary of State and to my team. This builds on my recent work setting up the new joint No10 and Cabinet Office Delivery Unit.
