I’m a fun comic book podcast that talks about books that came out 20 years ago. Nothing about that is more important than the political climate in the US right now. Follow me on Bluesky for comic takes but here it’s strictly me being angry.

An ad that argues private equity has too much power is taken down off the air by a private equity funded company that owns the team, the TV station that airs the team’s games, and the newspaper that covers the team. Platner couldn’t have written the script better himself.

Yesterday we started running this ad during the Red Sox game. Midway through the game the ad was taken down by the station (which is owned by Red Sox ownership). And then the Sox blew a 4-0 lead.

If you're worried about ticks, put up an owl box. The animal driving most Lyme disease in the eastern US is the white-footed mouse. Ticks that feed on them are far more likely to come away infected than ticks that feed on other animals. The bigger the local mouse population, the worse the next year's tick year. A single barred owl pair raising chicks can take hundreds of rodents in a breeding season. Owls also don't carry Lyme. The bacterium can't survive their digestive tract, so an owl that eats an infected mouse is a dead end for the disease. Researchers at the Cary Institute, the leading lab on Lyme ecology, have been explicit about this: "Landscapes that support predators have reduced Lyme disease risk." One owl box on its own isn't going to fix a tick year. But a yard with owls, foxes, bobcats, and weasels in it has fewer mice, and a yard with fewer mice has fewer infected ticks. If you have woods or fields nearby, a properly sized barn owl or screech owl box (different species, different boxes) is one of the most useful single things you can do for tick exposure at the landscape scale. Match the box to the owl that lives near you. The mouse is the problem, owls are the solution.

Watching all of Sheinbaum’s rapid fire accomplishments in Mexico and Mamdani’s similar run in NYC makes me think that, despite all of his flaws, a Bernie Sanders presidency would have been deeply transformative for America.

Okay, so I decided to check out another show in my collection--TORADORA. I bought Vol. 1 and 2 from the late, great Right Stuf (DVD & Blu-Ray) for around 80 bucks on July 11, 2017. Fast Forward to the modern day...$563.82 for VOL. 2, Blu-Ray ONLY. No sign of Vol. 1. YIKES.

Okay, somebody on Reddit pointed out that Eureka Seven Complete Collection is out of print...and prices for the Blu-Rays are SKY-FREAKING-HIGH so I had to see for myself. I bought my copy July 11th 2023 for $18 after taxes... NOW? It's $500 after taxes. A 2843% price increase!

Private equity is taking our homes. It's taking our hospitals. It's taking beloved local businesses and stripping them for parts. And now private equity is running the Red Sox into the ground. Our new ad ⬇️

You know what left out of the zoomer’s ordering 50 dollars of door dash daily is that private equity did destroy food delivery. Chinese food and pizza delivery was normal and affordable for working people.

Yeah, I used to get $0.99 Whoppers from Burger King all the time in high school and college prior to 2008. Now I got a bunch of mendacious cultists trying to convince me that didn't happen.

in 2007 Arby's had a "5 for $5" deal, you could pick five items between a drink, fries, cherry turnover, roast beef sandwich, milkshake, etc. me and a buddy would go there and get this, each got a sandwich, drink, we split a fry. under $3 each for lunch. USA used to be great.
