Love is the mark of the people of tasawwuf (Sufism), as mentioned in Maybudī’s classical tafsir. The Sufis are the people of ‘ishq, a word derived from ‘ashaqah, which refers to a kind of vine. When this vine winds itself around a tree, the tree withers and dies. In the same way, worldly love and the ego die within the Sufi.
