The remarkably rare and well-preserved York Helmet is one of only six surviving helmets from Anglo-Saxon England. Iron and copper alloy, AD 750-775. A spectacular example of Anglian artistry it is inscribed with the name of its owner, ‘Oshere’, who was probably a member of the powerful ruling dynasty of the kingdom of Northumbria. The helmet was buried with care in a square, wood-lined pit about a century after it was made (heirloom piece?). Perhaps for safeguarding and later retrieval at a time when York was occupied by Vikings. But it lay unrecovered for around a thousand years, until it was discovered by a digger operator in 1982. Yorkshire Museum, York. Photo my own yorkshiremuseum.org.uk/collections/co… For a detailed read on the amazing York Helmet, here’s a link to the published monograph “The Anglian helmet from 16-22 Coppergate” by D. Tweddle: …ections.yorkarchaeologicaltrust.co.uk/files/original… #Archaeology

Gold Ruby Goblet, Johann Kunckel von Löwenstjern, c. 1685 - c. 1690 The red colour is due to the addition of tiny gold particles to the glass melt. This process was pioneered by German alchemist Johann Kunckel in the late 17th century. (Rijksmuseum)

Predators routinely slaughtered so that rich toffs can spend over £10k for a day of sipping prosecco while blasting away at the hundreds of grouse that are driven right past them. Hardly sport. There is no place for this shite in a crowded world suffering a biodiversity crisis.

Osprey found shot in Angus Glens on opening day of grouse-shooting season. You couldn't make it up. It didn't survive its injuries. Police appeal & commentary from me 👇👇 raptorpersecutionuk.org/2024/08/26/osp…

It’s exactly one month ago since we brought this street dog in. He was completely broken, in agony and very angry with the world. Nobody could touch him as he kept trying to bite. I called him Anthony Hopkins and things have changed dramatically for him… (1/8) 🧵

Got trolled a few days ago for posting 'precious, middlebrow, feel-good twaddle'.👀 My tweets/photos are designed to lower stress hormone & lift mood. I'm told they work. I'd rather post an (arguably silly) tiny posy in a thimble & increase someone's dopamine than be a troll🌿

when I planted up here 40 years ago I put in many Buddlejas & rooted more from cuttings. Seldom was any flower spike bare of butterflies, or bees, they were always busy, now they are bare. Silent Spring became Silent Summer
Dr Steven Allain@stevoallain

Has anyone else spotted a lack of butterflies on buddleia this summer, or the missing cinnabar caterpillars on ragwort to name a few? Where have all of our insects gone? @Buzz_dont_tweet @DaveGoulson @ChrisGPackham @IoloWilliams2 #InsectApocalypse #MissingInsects #SilentSummer

#FindsFriday An exquisite Roman-era cobalt blue glass cup signed by the master glassmaker ‘Ennion’. AD 30-70. By incorporating his name into the mould’s design, Ennion was the first glassmaker to ‘brand’ his work. This luxury cup is one of a matching pair made from the same ‘Ennion’ mould. They were found together in a Roman tomb at Cuora, near Adria, Italy, in the early 1900s. Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Adria 📷 Leonardo.disimon #Archaeology

Based on my success to date of finding last-minute spare tickets to Sold Out gigs on Twitter. I thought I would chance my arm that the magic has not yet worn off. Any good folk out there looking to part with spare tickets to see @JohnnyFlynnHQ & Robert Macfarlane in EDINBURGH on May 2nd? Solid gold* awaits both of us! In hopeful expectation..... * I will pay you! #Johnnyflynn #sparetickets #EDINBURGH
