@AdamCSchembri @bananabull @c_borstell @kschonstrom The ‘echo’ term was introduced by Bencie Woll if I remember well, in her chapter in the green/yellow mouth book, 2001 @bananabull

@bananabull @c_borstell @kschonstrom @signrr There doesn’t seem any a priori reason to restrict echo phonology to mouth gestures patterning with signs. The core idea is that the hands and mouth echo each other, no? I’d call this syllabic echo phonology. But I’d have to take another look at the literature myself tbh.

You know that thing where hearing signers match the number of movements in a sign to the number of syllables in the spoken language translation? (ASL example: signing SISTER with two movements) Does that have a name? Has anyone done research on it?
