With everything happening in DnD space, how many groups out there are actually looking at another game. Ours is. Of 8 players, 5 are DM’s with publishable level HB work. WoTC has kicked us collectively in the nuts

No XP is for when the player uses skills Combat, Problem solving, Or simply doing something impossible and succeeding when everyone one else would fail. The DM is to provide a number in xp equivalent to difficulty. Thats why XP was given to creatures in the monster manuals For xp games players could and would track damage and kills in sessions to calculate XP for advancement. Occasionally arguments would start over who got what. But that was half the fun. Sadly this fell out of favour as the more inclusive nature of the current games started to take over. This is when the “effectiveness” of classes and play styles becomes noticeable. As an older player both in age and time playing I do miss the brutalist approach to the game and XP is a fun means to use. This is also represented in the difference in Level XP required between the classes especially at lower levels. Hitters healers and sneakers could generate a lot of XP from combat, healing and doing sneaky shit where a spell slinger is slower given the scarcity of things to happen for their core mechanic. At the highest level these numbers are massive and the length of time to get to the next level longer as the creatures and difficulty are worth more XP but it would still take a massive amount of time. This part was the real failing of the XP system. When you need over a million XP and the average orc was worth 25xp you would need to commit several genocidal campaigns to do it. XP is long gone as we play mainly Milestone games but it should come back.

The real money will be in the technical sciences, material sciences that will need to be developed to reach it. Black ocean mining will need Light weight super strong molecularly bonded metals forged in zero pressure will be worth their weight in platinum. AI and robotic systems that will need to be tested and then deployed ensuring 24/7 operations. While this would ruin the gold standard there are other asteroids out there with metals and purity levels that would stagger you.

Played it three times and I have died a lot I think 8 times in those three attempts. All new characters were introduced as sole survivors of other adventuring bands and joined together to survive. I remember one game where no original character made it out. It was a TPK. The party had a portable hole where the bodies were stored. It was funny as shit. The intros of the new characters read like a D&D esque horror story and they were hilarious ranging from Traps, to poison gases, to big hungry things with too many teeth. It made the game interesting as hell. The original Undermountain gave us the same problem. Level 7 was a bitch for us.
