I’m here in Kanchanaburi for the annual memorial service for the estimated 100,000 Asian labourers that died building the Thai-Burma Railway during the last war. Everyone talks about the Allied Prisoners of War all the time but hardly anything is mentioned about the Asians that died. On 1 May, I’ll be in Kanchanaburi to attend a very special and meaningful event marking the 2nd anniversary of the Hero Stone at Wat Thaworn Wararam. While many people know the story of the Death Railway through the experiences of Allied POWs, far fewer know about the tens of thousands of Asian labourers, known as Romusha, who were brought from across the region and forced to work under brutal conditions. Many never returned home, and for decades their stories remained largely untold. This Hero Stone was created to honour those forgotten victims, particularly Indian and Malayan Tamils who were among those sent to build the railway. Inspired by a South Indian tradition of commemorating sacrifice, it stands as a powerful symbol of remembrance, respect, and long-overdue recognition.
