Former NPA prosecutor Siphokazi Magangana has been sentenced by the Roodepoort Regional Court to an effective seven years’ direct imprisonment after pleading guilty to corruption and money laundering. Magangana admitted that in August 2022 she solicited R10 000 from two individuals, falsely promising to help them secure positions as a public prosecutor and aspirant prosecutor. The money was paid into a third party’s bank account to conceal the proceeds of the crime. She was arrested following a complaint, with the investigation led by the Organised Crime Unit. Under a plea and sentence agreement, she received seven years for each corruption charge and three years for each money laundering charge, with all sentences running concurrently. The former prosecutor, who joined the NPA in 2020 and later resigned, has remained in custody since her arrest. The NPA said the case highlights its commitment to rooting out corruption within the criminal justice system.
