I do believe a lot of the initial positive reception to this was just the pure novelty of the set up (JJJ and Uncle Ben! Gwen and Harry!) etc and the rest of the book was systematically engineered to not allow that set up/cast of characters to shine

The Boys series finale was weak but the only thing that prevents it from going into GOT finale territory is that it actually delivers what you'd expect (even if it wasn't done well) instead of trying to subvert your expectations at the last second.

People are blinded by how terrible Homelander is that they overlook the fact that Soldier Boy is also a terrible person, the only difference is that he's more stable than Homelander.
