You are in control to a great degree. Yes, your pepper spray and context SHOULD be huge risk minimizers but it happened anyway. That’s disheartening.
Senseless violence is natural and inevitable to some extent, but your personal risk is controlable. It’s still a statistics game, and risk never goes to zero, so I’m not victim blaming in any sense. It can just be being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
But also there is something to learn. My line of questioning is more abt learning defensive lessons. Why was he approached? Where was he? What context made him a victim, how can I avoid that context myself?
Please continue to carry pepper spray. I hope that your incident does not devalue the real control such a small tool actually gives you.
