Can it even be expressed in words? I do not pretend to know, but sometimes it is good to ask ourselves this

@simoneistyping @James_Martell_ Well, if you sleep around clearly you don’t value yourself or others. You don’t feel the need to earn someone and their body. The idea that you can use someone for sex and toss them aside, even if both consent, is where our society gets our lack of empathy from.

I am once again asking for a mandatory five-year study of French theory, with attention to the works of Bataille, Lacan, Deleuze, Foucault, & Klossowski, supplemented by a weekly seminar in queer theory focusing on Stryker, Sedgwick, Muñoz, & Bersani. @James_Martell_ sounds good?

@Yooper13 @James_Martell_ This is simply a dividing practice (see Foucault) that enables the State to oppress "degenerates," and I would not be surprised if it eventually oppresses the "disciplined" too

@Yooper13 @James_Martell_ The point is that desire is not an external threat you can exorcize since it is structural, productive, & embedded in social life. "Degeneracy" is a misreading of how desire actually functions, i.e., desire is constitutive, transgression is necessary, & normativity is unstable

I think of Critical Theory as Cold War-era philosophy lite, which is why I find it so interesting how it has retained its status in spite of the disappearance of the material conditions that led to its rise.

More gay men should read Nietzsche. His commandment isn’t to accept yourself, but to become yourself. He agrees you shouldn’t be ashamed of yourself, in fact he even calls this “the seal of liberation.” But he goes further. You are not perfect the way  you are. Not because you’re gay, but because you’re human. You are unfinished, with a potential that can only be reached through risk and reflection. Being told “you’re perfect the way you are” is boring and limiting. Life isn’t about clinging to a life preserver. It’s about learning how to swim and choosing to chase adventures upstream. Nietzsche’s call is to put off shame and answer the call to life. There are talents to develop, people to meet, and a fuller self you are meant to become.  Anyone telling you to be ashamed of yourself for being gay, or that you’re just fine the way you are is completely missing the mark.  Read Nietzsche. Become yourself. Reach your potential.
