My dad has early onset Alzheimer’s. Diagnosed 16 years ago, when he was 60. Much of the freedom I have today to navigate this world I own to him. He can’t eat or walk or go to the bathroom by himself anymore. I carry the same genes that increase predisposition for the disease. He was a military pilot and early in his career an enthusiastic photographer as well, although I only discovered his photos a few years ago. A large part of mine and mom’s time and money is spent on his care, which means they never got to enjoy their deserved retirement and I have limited ability to invest in myself. He deserves every bit of it.

I was finally able to produce today the photograph that was in my mind even before the submissions period for Keys and Gates started: the Artist and teh Open Sea A man rows a bathtub through lanes of rush-hour traffic. The slowest participant in the frame, he’s the only one going anywhere of his own. There is no water there. The sea he was promised turned out to be traffic. The road is infrastructure built for speed and volume, there is no place in it for anyone moving at their own pace. Still he rows, unhurried, as if the promise were worth holding to even after the water is gone. What he holds is little, but all of it is his. This is the artist in the marketplace: present, visible, but structurally ignored, moving by muscle through a system that moves by volume. Platforms that call themselves open seas are in fact corridors, permissioned for velocity and trade, with no lane for meaningful creation, no attention to what the small fish needs. There is no application for what the artist is doing, however that is the point: the free act is the one that never asks. Composite long exposure digital photograph, directed, shot on Canon 6DMII, edited and color graded by me today (July 6th, 2026) in São Paulo and submitted to Keys and gates on the same date. 6529.io/waves/4ff022b3…
