As Flora Page KC resigns from the Legal Services Board over the government's "tyrannical" plans to curtail the ancient English right to trial by jury, I've noticed some people ask whether opponents of the policy are "planning to commit crime". The right to trial by jury is important because it protects those who say that they are NOT guilty of an offence. It is precisely because we DO NOT intend to commit crimes that we oppose the erosion of our right to trial by jury - in case we find ourselves wrongly accused of offences by the state, with the state also acting as sole arbiter of guilt.
