The National party had a leader unafraid to take on the media, but they (Willis et al) dumped him because he wasn't "progressive" enough. Here Simon Bridges tries to explain to the commercially ignorant John Campbell how an oil well drilling contract works. In order to spread the risk of failure, the costs of drilling a well are usually shared by a number of different companies. However only one is designated the "operator". The operator arranges the contract drilling rig and all equipment needed to drill the well and oversees the operation. None of the other financial partners participate in this process. They receive daily drilling progress reports of course, but do not interfere. Simon tries to tell Mr Campbell that Anadarko was only a shareholder in the Deep Horizon well and not the operator, but the distinction is apparently too complex for John to understand. Bottom line is Simon Bridges, like him or not, put up a very good fight here and its something that Mr Luxon could learn from. If he wanted to.

Insurance companies and our banks must also lead. It’s been great to see strong policies around assistance already coming out from some banks. Our SMEs will need this wrap around support. Thank you to everyone out in droves working to keep us safe and sound.

The country needs the affected Auckland and Upper North Island businesses back on their feet as soon as possible. This must be a team effort where everyone steps up and plays their part. This doesn’t just fall on government’s shoulders.
