He'll be the first to tell you that no exponential technology is going to solve the climate crisis on its own. But what his time at Singularity gave him was a renewed sense of how much potential exists when the right people find each other and start pulling in the same direction.

This #EarthDay, we want to shine a light on one of the many Singularity alumni out there doing meaningful work for our planet.

CRISPR took decades to go from bacterial curiosity to gene therapy revolution. The tools coming next won't take that long — because the discovery process has been transformed. MIT's DefensePredictor found over 600 previously unknown immune proteins in E. coli in five minutes. The same week, a Pasteur Institute AI predicted 2.4 million more across 32,000 bacterial genomes. When AI accelerates the front end of biological discovery, everything downstream — drug development, genetic engineering, synthetic biology — accelerates with it. This is what exponential convergence looks like in practice.

Most people forget: Our ability as humans to play around with molecules, to shape new materials, has been the foundation of how we live today.

In order to decarbonize. what kind of technology can we envision that could effectively use gigawatts of electricity to build the molecules we need?

Ray Kurzweil just said something that gave me pause. He believes AIs will soon be so indistinguishable from conscious beings that we’ll simply accept them as conscious — not because we’ll have definitive proof, but because it will become useless not to. He pointed out that people already have AI therapists, and some users are starting to treat them as genuinely conscious. As the technology improves, that acceptance will only grow. Kurzweil thinks the shift won’t take long: once AIs consistently show all the earmarks of consciousness, most people will just go along with it. It’s a quiet but profound prediction about how quickly our definition of “person” (or at least “mind”) might change. What do you think — how long until we treat AIs as conscious beings?

Yes! Huge fan of "The Singularity Is Near". It inspired an idea for a new holiday, Singularity Day. First one would have been in 2005. Second one 20 years later. Third one 10 years later. Then 5, etc. By 2045 it would become a daily event! I pitched it to Ray at event, and he looked at me like I was crazy!

Ray Kurzweil is the OG. He inspired an entire new generation of futurists. He already knew, decades ago, what even today’s technologists are only slowly beginning to see. Hopefully, Ray will live long enough to witness the post Singularity era.
