But many Japanese people wear them because they didn’t do their makeup. Because they forgot to shave. Because they look tired. Because they don’t feel like talking. Because they just don’t want to show their face today. And every spring, pollen attacks the whole country like it has a personal grudge. So no. Japan’s mask culture is not just about fear. Sometimes it’s health. Sometimes it’s manners. And sometimes it’s just, “Please don’t look at my face today.”
