This is one of the most ridiculous mistakes found in a movie related to computer viruses. In Independence Day , the two heroes, played by Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum, manage to defeat the alien armada by introducing a computer virus into their network… Sure, they use a Mac to do that, but even with a very fancy Mac, you still have to have understood how the computer systems of an extraterrestrial civilization a thousand times more advanced than ours work, then have managed to design a virus dangerous to them, and then manage to connect to their system. (are they using USB-2 or 3?) The screenwriter had an explanation: “Okay: what Jeff Goldblum’s character discovered was that the programming structure of the alien ship was a binary code,” Devlin replied. “And as any beginning programmer can tell you, binary code is a series of ones and zeroes. What Goldblum’s character did was turn the ones into zeroes and the zeroes into ones, effectively reversing the code that was sent.” Are you buying this explanation?
