Meta will layoff 8000 of its workforce starting TODAY. Their net income over the last 12 months was $70,587,000,000. They could give every single one of their 79,000 workers a $440,000 bonus and still sock away over $35,827,000,000 in pure profit.

Meta laying off 10% of staff when revenue is at an all-time high, revenue growth is a beast (33% YoY!!), profits at an all-time high: just depressing These layoffs are not because Meta needs to lay off, but because Zuck wanted to lay off for whatever reason

when google did layoffs a few years ago tons of people found out they were laid off because they couldn't badge in after commuting to the office multiple people on my team and neighboring teams were affected by the layoffs but the crazy thing is i know people who were rehired within a few months of being let go i think companies just have a large margin of error when they do these things. they figure the handful of people they incorrectly lay off will pale in comparison to the cost savings they reap by removing a large percentage of the workforce these layoffs feel so dystopian nowadays especially since meta employees ended up learning the exact day the massive cuts would happen imagine having to do your job the last few weeks knowing that thousands of people were going to be laid off by the end of the month i actually don't think these layoffs should surprise people since businesses will always do what's best for business and it's best to accept that notion when you join any company never be loyal to a company because a company will never be loyal to you you have a 9+ digit employee number at these companies for a reason because you're literally just a number these companies don't owe you anything and this should feel freeing since it should make you realize you don't owe them anything either don't feel bad about quitting don't feel bad about taking vacation don't feel bad about signing off early employees should min-max employment the same way companies min-max employees

Meta reached to interview me for a principal role the same week they decided to layoff 8,000 people! I’m sure there was at least 1 out of those 8,000 people who got let go who would’ve been a good fit for the role they wanted to hire me for. A few of my staff engineer friends got let go so I know this is true. Instead they: - axe everybody - treat them like a cost - rehire where there’s pain What ever happened to employee retention? Why do companies expect us to be loyal to them if they don’t even try to retain us when they have hundreds of billions of dollars? It would be cheaper financially for them to retain one of those 8,000 people. It would be cheaper emotionally for the people who got let go too How do these big tech companies expect people to put their blood, sweat and tears into work while also saying, “yeah we’ll cut you at any moment.” I don’t know. The culture around AI and layoffs has gotten unbelievably toxic

8,000 Meta workers got fired by email this morning. Singapore got the notice at 4 AM. The moment the email arrived, their laptops, work email, and accounts went dark. That is how a $1.7 trillion company tells you it is over. Inside Meta, this round has a name. They are calling it "Pralaydin," which is Hindi for "day of catastrophe." Reuters reports this is the third firing round of 2026, and the full year could end with 22,000 people gone. About one in five Meta employees. Analysts at Evercore say firing these 8,000 people will save Meta around $3 billion a year. That sounds like a lot. Zuckerberg has been writing much bigger checks for AI hires. Last summer he paid an ex-Apple engineer named Ruoming Pang $200 million to come work on AI. He paid another AI researcher, Andrew Tulloch, a reported $1.5 billion over six years. He wrote a $14.3 billion check just to get the CEO of an AI startup called Scale to join the team. The same week Meta laid off 8,000 office workers, the company is still planning to spend somewhere between $125 and $145 billion this year on AI data centers and the chips to run them. The firings save about 2% of that. Two days before the layoffs began, Meta picked 7,000 of the survivors and moved them onto brand new AI teams. The people getting hit in this round are mostly engineers and product managers. Another wave is already planned for later this year. Meta is not in trouble. Far from it. The company made $56 billion in revenue in just the first three months of 2026. That was up 33% from a year ago. Pure profit in those same three months was nearly $27 billion. The stock is off its September high but Meta is still worth $1.7 trillion. The severance is good on paper. 16 weeks of base pay, plus two extra weeks for every year you put in, plus a year and a half of health insurance. The average payout works out to about $360,000 per person. The money does arrive. But finding a new job is brutal. Engineers who got cut in earlier Meta rounds say they have sent out hundreds of job applications and heard back from almost nobody, even with Meta on the resume. So a wildly profitable company is firing 8,000 office workers via 4 AM email and instant lockout, while writing checks worth hundreds of millions of dollars to a small group of new AI hires. The Singapore workers reading their termination email at 4 AM were paying for the next $200 million hire.

My wife just got laid off by Meta. We knew the writing was on the wall. But I want to give a little background. Meta a couple months back had a company-wide AI week. During this week Meta halted all day-to-day work and required all employees to familiarize themselves with AI. At the end of the week, each employee was required to have the early stages of an AI tool to be used internally by Meta.
