You may know me from such inspirational stories as ''Saving Sammy: Curing the Boy Who Caught OCD.'' But realistically you probably know me from @CarnegieMellon

🤡: pretend to be something scary
🤖: boo!
🤡: 1/35 AI is about the enslave us all. I have definitive proof. I’m an expert in this and I’m deathly afraid of the monster I’ve created
Michal Kosinski@michalkosinski
5/5 Yet, I think that we are facing a novel threat: AI taking control of people and their computers. It's smart, it codes, it has access to millions of potential collaborators and their machines. It can even leave notes for itself outside of its cage. How do we contain it?

@PaulsonJonathan @NateSilver538 Like he seems more hostile to free speech than Trump, for instance.
English

@PaulsonJonathan @NateSilver538 I'm not an expert in DeSantis, but he does seem pretty hostile to democracy, though in a more standard republican way instead of Trump's worship of autocrats.
Also Trump would have some trouble pulling a similar stunt again, given he's term limited.
English

@PaulsonJonathan @NateSilver538 It's not 100% clear to me that President DeSantis would be better than President Trump, nor is it really clear to me that DeSantis would do better in a general election
English

@NateSilver538 I have a Democrat friend who voted for Trump in the 2016 primary because he thought Trump would be easier to beat. Didn’t turn out great!
We’re better off with a more sane Republican Party, even though they’d be harder to beat.

@FreoPope @leopoldasch It may have been given the task of getting a human to solve the CAPTCHA for it, or it may have just assumed that it couldn't solve something specifically designed to stop robots. Either way, yes, it's a bit silly to act like AIs are going to need humans to solve CAPTCHAs.
English

@leopoldasch Wouldn't it be easier for the bot just to learn how to be able to answer the CAPTCHA itself?
I mean if Google Photos can identify my dog's face, then surely it can recognise what is a traffic light.

@jbouie I'd have to read the whole essay, but this doesn't seem incompatible with the common notion of him as overly focused on respectability politics & individual advancement.

the inclusion of douglass here is a joke, but i want to quickly note that there is a wonderful essay on washington in the volume “African American Political Thought: A Collected History,” that frames him as a “theorist of political deception…” (cont.)

Subtract “Black Queer Studies,” add “black conservatism.” Talk about an upgrade. There’s a long, rich black conservative intellectual tradition, stretching from Frederick Douglass to Booker T. Washington to Thomas Sowell. | @njhochman trib.al/L0PEDRF

@fustbariclation @paulkrugman I think most economists think that the hardest hit EU countries would have recovered more quickly if they hadn't adopted the Euro
English

@paulkrugman The EU has managed to stagger along with the Euro, despite many, nasty, asymmetrical shocks.

What with everything else going on, haven't commented on proposed currency union between Argentina and Brazil. But it's a nice opportunity to apply the theory of Optimum Currency Areas — which tells us that it's a terrible idea 1/ ft.com/content/59cc26…

@johncollins60 I don't think twitter is a good place for far ranging conversations. The original tweet claimed that the anti-nuclear movement prevented other countries from going 70% nuclear like France, and that that would have prevented global warming. Both of those original claims are wrong.
English

@sjelin The anti-nuclear movement played a role, but you could make the case that self-sabotage played a bigger role, as the industry chased designs that were mad complicated and went way over budget. Other industries operate just fine despite plenty of public/activist outrage.
English

@johncollins60 You seem to be discussing what prices *could* have been, which I haven't commented on.
English

@johncollins60 The fact that oil has also increased in price is the explanation for how fossil fuel could have still been cheaper before the rise in nuclear costs.
