@sjoerdly @SteveElsewhere “Common pool” is the standard definition I believe. And it’s usually short hand for “unless someone is accountable, no one is accountable” The implications of this are vast different to what Ostrom shows.

@cliffhazell @SteveElsewhere Funny, that’s how I thought the tragedy of the commons actually was defined. Ungoverned. (Apparently it was revised in 1991) “If users of such resources act to maximise their self-interest and do not coordinate with others to maximise the overall common good,” 🤔

@SteveElsewhere Lack of, or erosion of social structures that govern the commons. When those systems exist, as Elinor Ostrom’s studies explored, the “tragedy” is avoided and managed. The tragedy is actually one of “unmanaged commons” or “free markets” not of all commons.

Great thread and something I’ve struggled with myself. Combined with a helper’s /fixers mindset and it can be quite toxic. I hope I’ve learned to be more open, honest and courageous to take responsibility for my own actions and choices. Still learning.
